Fire tender...Potato Chips???
« on: January 02, 2006, 04:03:09 AM »
Hey guys,

While surfing through the forum, I read where frittos make a good fire starter, as would peanut butter.  Well, I had to try.

Jiffy Creamy Peanut Butter does not produce a flame, but will burn and stink.  Maybe I just didn't use the right brand.

Now I looked all over the house for a pack of Frittos, but soon exhausted the search.  What I did find was a pack of "Ruffles" potato chips.  I put a match to one of the chips and it started right up, producing a slow burning, pretty blue and green flame.  I couldn't believe the amount of oil that one little chip produced while burning.  Give it a try and you'll be amazed....

So that does it for me.  Next time I'm heading out, I'm bringing a knife, matches, and big bags of potato chips.  What I can't eat...I'll burn (HA!HA!HA!).

My boys were using potato chips for fire starters when they were in Scouts 30 years ago. Trouble was saving enough chips from the voracious scouts to start a fire!

Just look at all the calories and the fat in there!!  All that grease is what is burning, and thats what we eat!!!   Notice when they burn you see a wetness by the flame... that is all that oil....  mmmm baby.  It would be like taking a bite of potato, then drinking a teaspoon of vegetable oil... hahaha  but dang are they good tasting!!!

Friend of mine brought home some tostada shells (friend corn tortilla)  tells me, "guy at the store says these have no grease"  I tell him no way, how they make them crispy, cause they aren't baked, they tasted to good.  Get out the lighter for the burn test, fires up real good, the grease actually starts dripping off when it burns out.  Anything fried in grease, no matter how dry it seems, still got a whooooooooole lot fuel in there.

Duct tape is a good fire starter also. Burns hot and long. Carry some with you to fix something or start a fire.

Nothing to do with corn.  It is because they are thick and hold a lot of grease, it is the grease that burns, and the corn is the leftover black crust.

A friend worked at a small Mom & Pop store. Had a roof leak one time that made lots of merchandise un-sellable. Started a fire in the little incinerater out back. Then threw in a few cases of Frito's. Well the thing started to burn like crazy! So he decides the best thing to do is close the door, smart. But then the incinerater starts huffing and chuffing and shaking,(starved for air). So now the guy decides to open the door, not so smart. When all that nice oxygen got to that fire, WOW!!!!! A fire ball the size of a trash truck came out throwing the guy 10 feet back. Gave him a nice burn and an afro.  He was darn lucky to survive.

Hey corn burns well.  This is the eighth winter I have used shelled corn to heat my house, at burns a little hotter than wood pellets .   As far as fritos go I'm sure the oil in the chips helps as well.

yup... I still blow young scouts minds by starting a fire with a magnifying glass and a bag of fritos...  matches work better at night...

I thought this was old injun tricks, injuns didn't have fritos.
and boy scouts are supposed to use two sticks, teaching them to use fritos
and i'll bet a disposable lighter too, you should be ashamed

If you pack clothes dryer lint, a tube of rubber cement and kitchen matches in a large pill bottle with you, you will have reliable tinder.  Squeeze a little cement onto dryer lint and the stuff almost lights itself.  Eat the potato chips, while you're enjoying the fire....
Young guys should hang out with old guys; old guys know stuff

empty a card board type egg carton.  Stuff as much dryer lint into each hole as you can and then fill the holes with unburned candle wax... you know "the left overs" from your wife's "smell purty's".  While it's cooling you can pack more and more dryer lint in to each hole with a stick.  Once it's cold, cut the cardboard carton into twelve pieces.  I usually carry three pieces in my pack in a ziplock.  There's a BIC lighter in there too.  One piece will easily start a dry or slightly wet fire.
