.54 T/C Hawken
« on: March 12, 2009, 11:45:01 AM »
I built this from parts I scrounged online, and in pawn shops.  I saved about $150.00/$200.00 off the going price.

Really nice Swampman. Great picture as usual. It reminds me of the movie about the Mountain Man, Jeremiah Johnson, when Ol' Jeremiah is so pleased and satisfied when he finally gets himself a .30 cal Hawken, but after awhile, he feels he's a bit under gunned with it. Later he lucks into finding a .50 cal Hawken when he pries it out of dead Hatchet Jack's frozen hands. He later tells another character that he wouldn't have taken it from Hatchet Jack, "but damn, it was a Hawken."

Looking good...Let us know how she shoots...

The line in JJ about the .30 caliber Hawken I suspect should have been 30 gauge, making her about a .54 caliber...

Funny thing about those older movies...I still remember the girl I took to see it...

Swampman, I may be confusing you with another "Swampman" but that fellow used to say T/C barrels were only good for tomato stakes!

We'll see, I've never had any luck with the 1:48s.

Me neither, I've never gotten good roundball groups from any shallow groove barrel regardless of twist.

Mornin Boys,
I have a 50 cal 1/66 twist T/C round ball barrel that I got from T/C and it shot 0k, better then the 1/48 I feel. Then I got me a Green mountain drop in for it. It's 32"long and has a 1/70 twist. I like it better. They come in either 15/16 or 1". I also got the new stock, the old design would crack up by the tang. The only thing I didn't like bout the new design was it was shorter. So I added a pad and that made it 3/4" longer. I feel the GM barrels are worth lookin into.

The stocks crack because most folks shoot loads that are way too heavy.

Evenin Swampman,
The T/C stocks crack because they had a weak spot in em. That's why T/C changed the design. They will re place em for free. T/C is good like that.

I've never had a problem with one, but then 70 grains of 3F under a round ball is a max charge IMO.

TCs recommended max load for the .54 roundball is 120gr FF, see page 76.

That's why the stocks crack.  I can't see a need in North America for that kind of load.

I had one of those tc hawkens with the lock area cracked. IMO it can be caused by many things, over tightening the lock screws, a loose tang ect.  Even a tight fitting tang can cause it to crack (been there!!) I dont think they would give it a max load of 120g 2f while they know about the problem with the stock.  Jonathan Browning Mountain Rifle has a 150gr Loose powder max load, they dont seen to have this issue. Even my cva has a 120gr loose powder load.

It's safe enough.  It will crack the stock on most any rifle sooner or later.  It's just way too much powder.

Mornin Swampman.
Your weapon will tell you the amount of powder it wants you to use. One may want 70 grains, nother may want 90. Mine likes 85 of fff rs and that's a good hunting load for me. Are you new at shootin smoke poles?

Me neither, I've never gotten good roundball groups from any shallow groove barrel regardless of twist.

Whether shallow groove or not, my CVA Hawken shot pretty good prb groups out to 50 yards with 70grs Goex FFFG. It shot even better groups with a Harvester Crush rib sabot and a .452/300gr bullet out to 100yds, under 4" group.
