45 APC Reloading Help!!!!!
« on: September 19, 2003, 03:57:48 PM »
I'm using a RCBS press and new dies when I size the case it goes into the 45 gauge and falls out easy I flair the case just enough so the bullet can rest on it. Now when I set the bullet I check the length against a factory load so far it is going good. Now when I set the die for the tamper crimp the case holder comes all the way and touches the die doing it a little at a time and checking it with the gauge it is a tight fit think it is tight enough it will jam an auto. I've measured the cases they are in spec. any ideas why it goes so far up in the die and still doesn't give a good crimp?? Could the trouble be I set the bullet to far in the case??Maybe I should add i'm loading 230gr RN Cast bullets. Some would go in the gauge and fall out easy and some wouldn't. I've been checking the ones that fit the gauge good and the ones that don't with a set of calipers I cnn't find much variation in any of the measurements buuut has to be someplace and I can't see why to put a taper crimp it goes sofar up the case holder touches the die any ideas????

If you are setting your overall length to the book specks then I doubt that you're seating it too deep. You should be able to see the case rolling over the bullet if thats the case. Are you sure you have 45ACP dies and not 45 colt? You should not be able to touch the shell holder with the crimp die if every thing is set right. Be sure and figure out whats wrong before you try shooting any of these rounds. A bullet set too deep will cause preasure to sky rocket.   KN

Borrow another crimp die and see if it still happens. Sounds to me like your die isn't right. Your best bet would be to find some one whos been loading awhile and ask them to take a look.  KN

lostone1413:  You mentioned you were reloading round nose cast bullets to the same depth as factory fodder.  Are your bullets of the same design or do the cast bullets have a slightly longer nose with a narrower ogive?  I ran into a similar problem reloading some H&G cast roundnose bullets while making seating standards according to somebody's fmj mil-surp ammo.  Depending on the bullet you are using, you may have to seat it out a bit in order for either the crimp die or the taper die to have enough actual bullet to tighten the case against.  HTH.  Mikey.

I'll have to check the length. I got some speer ammo and loaded aboout 50 rounds all were good I now think it is just maybe a batch of cast bullets that some wern't sized right. But I will check the length
