Newbie to forum and silhouette, need help!!
« on: December 10, 2008, 03:46:36 AM »
Hi all
I am new to this forum.
I would like to enter the competition shooting world and need a little help.
I have looked at many different disciplines and it seems high power silhouette is where I will enter for now.
I have a 270 win but was told by a NRA official that it isn't pratical for silhouette. I could get a new barrel for it but maybe a new gun is in order.
What calibers are most popular?
I reload so ammo isn't an issue.
Please HELP!!
Mike

hilbilly, the popular cartidges are .260 rem, 6.5x47 lapua, 7br, 7-08 and others. I would say a mod. 700 rem. would be a good choice for a rifle. My first choice would be a .260 rem in mod. 700 using 107 smk for the c,p,t and 142 smk for the rams. Before building a new rifle you could use your .270 to see how you like the sport, then if you like it you can have a rifle built. Also attending some matches will give you an idea what guns other shooters use.

I agree - shoot what you have first.  I have been shooting a .270 for four years now and just bought a used custom in 7mm-08, which I will be shooting this coming season.  Just worked up the loads.

If you going to buy new it seems everyone is buying .260 rem's, at least those that I shoot with.  I know one person that uses a 30-06's with loaded 180's and he isn't going to change.

With my .270 I shoot 130 gr Hornady SP's, under 45 grains of IMR 4064.  This doesn't have much recoil and has never left a Ram and is moa.

I agree, with the right loads there's no reason a 270 wouldn't work fine. And now that you can get match quality bullets in light weights designed for the 6.8 SPC, you should be able to come up with some nice C-P-T loads that don't beat you up, and use the 130 or heavier bullets for rams.
