45 conical bullets?
« on: March 30, 2009, 03:39:27 AM »
Looking for other's recomendations on 45 cal conical bullets for deer hunting in a 1:48-28" caplock.  Currently using Pyro, but will switch to BP if needed.  Need to replace maxi-balls/ maxi-hunters/buffalo bullets/great plains with something more accurate, or in the case of maxi-ball's, easier to clean.  Just completed a rebuild on a T/C Hawken with a never shot barrel and was appalled at the crud left over after a hot water bath, from the bore butter lube!  Awesome accuracy with the maxi, but the BB sure does leave a lot to be desired (or undesired)!  In the past, Buffalo's and Great Plains were not as accurate as I'd like.  What's your favorite bullet?

I'm an RB fan Denny, and I can tell you from experiance that a .45 PRB will do the job on Whitetail. The biggest problem most guy's have is wanting (or thinking ) they need MAX loads for anything bigger than a rabbit! Accuracy is really the key issue, and that many times suffers when the shooters goal is max velocities and footpounds, anyway, I'm sure you've seen this argument many times and I don't want to "kick a dead horse"," it ain't worth nuthin anyway's".
If the accuracy of the maxi works for ya, why not just try a different lube? Years back I was messing around with Lee REAL's and different lubes and found that liquid Alox worked just as well as BB. I'd just pour some on some aluminum foil then roll'm around. Once it set's you can even get a second layer on. I did use Ox-yoke wonder wads. I can't really remember if I had cleaning issues,,it must not have been too bad or I'd have rememberd that! BP cartrage shooters use the stuff all the time. Some guy's mix crisco and bee's wax. Heck, there's a recipie right on top of the page.
Long story short, I got better accuracy with roundball and have just stuck with them ever sence. good luck to ya.

Necchi, with my first 45 Hawken, 30 years ago, I used to go to weekend shoots alot and used a .445 RB with a .015 Ox-Yoke All Day Wonder patch with 60 gr Goex and could shoot the eye off a nat at 50!  Then I took a long shot at a deer and bounced one off the shoulder!  They way it kicked, I figured it didn't go far.  When I got to the spot it was standing (muddy corn stubble) I found hair everywhere but no blood.  While looking for blood, I found the ball with patch marks on one side/hair marks on the other!  Switched over to maxi's and learned that at 75 yds the 60 gr w/RB and 90 gr with maxi's shot to the same point.  The prelubed maxi's shot well and clean up was pretty easy.  Going back to this after 10+ years, something has changed.  Did a search this morning and found that Ox Yoke now makes Bore Butter for T/C.  It's not All Day Wonder Lube anymore either!  The maxi's shoot very good (still), but I NEVER had that much gooo in the barrel.  One other thing I do is to cut a deep X in the top of the bullet with my knife and when I started doing that, got much better expansion.  Then they came out with the Maxi-hunter.  I'm thinking the old Crisco/Beeswax standby may be in order.    Thanks for your insight and also to Bigblock for the PM  ;)
