Gloves & socks
« on: December 28, 2008, 10:32:49 PM »
I'll be going camping this Friday and would like to find some good (but fairly thin, for shooting) cold weather gloves and some warm socks. Temps will get down into the 30s. We won't be getting wet.

Any good ones out there at stores like REI or similar?

Socks SMARTWOOL  different weights for use temperature, etc   GREAT socks

Gloves ??? I like something that won't slip something with a tectured, leather, or grippy material.  Don't know if REI would have that. We have Cabellas and Sportmans Ware house nearby, they have decent shooting gloves DICKS other stores too

Be prepared, If camping I always plan on getting wet even in the desert!

Victor, glad to see we have more in common than things that go boom. I picked up 3 pairs of 99% polyester and 1% spandex from walmart yesterday. I too like wool but only for short walks, like going to the deer stand. The other option is to use cotton socks and plan on changing them at least twice but more like three times a day. They should be dry by the next day depending on how much walking you do. I also use a pair of polyester hunting gloves with a leather patch across the palm of the hand. They are thin but hold enough heat while still allowing me to perform detailed tasks. Mine are made by remington and also came from W-M. They worked really well in the rain during my trip with Nitrosteel 3 weeks ago.

 Thanks Joe,

I'll look into those options. I did end up buying some Smartwool socks, and they're very good (they should be at $20/pair).

I like cotton, but I think when I drink water it drains down to my feet in about 10 minutes.

I grew up using military wool socks in cold weather, but they were about like sticking your foot into a tumbleweed...

I like wool too and they have certainly come a long way in the last 10 years. Let me know how those socks work.

Merino wool socks, for me are the only way to go, heavy weight works for 20deg up. For the gloves, go to a place where they sell commercial fishing gear. They should carry very thin neopreme gloves with a tacky palm. There for picking fish out of the nets, but work great for other chores where you need to feel what your handeling. Suprisingly warm too.
