Getting into Exotics and Game Ranching
« on: July 30, 2003, 12:56:57 AM »
:D Howdy! Seems like more and more people are getting into exotics and game ranching these days.  Is there a magazine or book that gives the "ins and outs" and "risk vs rewards" of exotic game ranching? I've been giving it some thought and would like to hear from those that know about it, etc. Any information appreciated.  Thanks!
Happy Trails!

Your best source of information on exotics and the exotic ranching industry will be the Exotic Wildlife Association. Their contact information is

EXOTIC WILDLIFE ASSOCIATION
HC7, Box 24C • Ingram, TX 78025
830-367-7761 • FAX 830-895-4998
E-mail: info@exoticwildlife.net

Ask for Charlie Seals, he is their executive director and can provide you with a lot of resources and other contacts that should be able to answer any questions you might have. Good luck.

I agree with Denvas, the Exotic Wildlife Association.   They have a web page too.   Order the book from them, or at least ask about it, its titled

Exotics on the Range:  A Texas experiment.  Its written by two PhDs who have done a lot of research with exotics.

Ask about seminars to go to, the annual meeting, etc. when you call or e-mail them.   e-mail me, I might go with you.

Texas is the world headquarters, I think, for exotics.   We have like 220,000 of them, not counting the wild hogs, like 1.5 million of those.

Has anyone found something more current than Exotics on the Range that they found useful and enjoyable?  Some good info in Exotics on the Range, but kind of dry and definately a wee bit dated now.  Just wondering...

Clay,

I just logged on after a long break and saw your post. There are other titles around on Game Ranching. Though not based on the Texas Industry as far as I am aware. The Exotic Wildlife Assoc is a great source. Speaking of which I must renew my membership.

I have a few titles here on Game Ranching in Southern Africa which are very informative and upto date. I will check and see what I have and let you know. The Sth Africans are the pioneers of the Industry and much of the climate is very similar to Southern Texas. Hence the Wildlife from Sth Africa doing so well in the southern half of your state! I have visited Sth Africa and Texas many times as I am researching a proposal to establish a Game Ranch in Texas. Will be returning again Next March/April... I never made it to D'Hanis but have spent some time in Medina and other parts of the Hill Country... Sure is a lovely place!

There is a lot to learn out there in Game Ranching Exotics, but with the expertise already available, the right ethics and marketing there sure is a lot of promise!!!

cheers...

Texas home to exotics ranching.

This weekend there were some hunters at the ranch from Mississippi and I asked them about exotics in their home state.  They said there were two places, only 2 places, in the entire state of Mississippi.  Thats why they drove 12 hours or so to hunt at Rocky Top.  I guess Texas is the place in the US for exotics.   We saw over 100 free ranging low fenced axis down the road on the R.R. 3 miles from Rocky Top.  Couldn't count them all.

contact Howie on these forums and see.  he has a friend who has a ranch in Woodville Texas that had some cheap prices on Axis and other exotic does.  Where we were hunting, axis does were $275.00.
