Older Smiths Endurance upgrade...???
« on: March 13, 2009, 02:58:14 AM »
Hello all,

I was wondering if older model smith's, either a 29 or 57 can be upgraded with the current endurance pkg. improvements if the gun would ever loosen up, or will old style parts be used by S&W service?

I had a 657 a couple years ago, but it just didn't do it for me in the looks / handling dept. so I went to a FA 97 in 41 mag.  I really like the looks of the classic smiths but would rather buy an older no-lock gun if it can be upgraded if necessary.

Thanks,

benny

10-4 on the classic line, they are sweet!!! But for an actual older revolver I would leave it as is. If anything breaks, take it to a local gunsmith and have him/her only replace the part that needs to be replaced.  ;)

The Endurance Package upgrades were pretty extensive, including changing internal bearing surfaces to radii, etc. I'm not sure that the factory could / would do this. You'd have to contact them. Bear in mind, too, that part of the endurance upgrade included adding weight, which is where the full barrel lug idea came from.
If a shooter will simply back off from full power loads a bit, an original 29 or 57 can be expected to last a long time. Replacement of an occasional part might be necessary, at most.

Unless you're revolver has the cylinder unlocking and backing up, what's the point?  I've been shooting S&Ws up to .44 Magnum for decades and have never had that happen.

The factory does not do the endurance package to guns made before this was common part of the package.
