3 valuble vintage flyreels found at Rockefeller tag sale
« on: April 27, 2006, 02:19:57 PM »
This qualifies as different types of treasure as i have spoken about.
A buddy i fish with works for the Rockefeller estate here in NY.

Every year the estate has a tag sale and he went and purchased three custom one of a kind flyreels made for a member of the Rockefeller family and engraved with that family members name.

For TEN dollars each he purchased all vintage and turn of the century a Valentine flyreel in custom wooden case, a Bogdon flyreel in custom wooden case and a Vom Hoffe in wooden case.
All were engraved and  in mint shape.

He's no dummy and knew just what he had. A quick call to the Flyfishing museum in Livingston Manor NY and he confirmed the Valentine reel to be worth $600. The Bogdon to be worth $3000. And highly collectable and sought after Vom Hoffe Reel to be worth $5500! Not bad for a thirty dollar investment!

This just goes to show that treasure is not always buried in the ground for those in the know.

If you all have any stories of finds like these lets hear them :D

I guess your buddy won't be finding any deals there next year, will he?
 :P
He'd better hope they don't read about his big score. You say he works FOR the estate?    He wouldn't want me on the jury.

He plans to throw a few hundred to them for a donation. He considers it penance for not recieving a Christmas bonus last year, and i agree totally! Me, i say too bad, as how would anyone running such a sale not have even the slightest  idea that ANYTHING associated to the Rockefeller family could be worth alot of money and not have things appraised before they went up for grabs???

Doesnt matter either way, as a legal deal was made and moneys paid in full and thats that.      :D

I say more power to him. I buy stuff at rumage sales all the time that I know is worth a lot more than what they are selling it for. Sometimes they do too they just do not care they want to get rid of it. Last really good find Was a Leupold m8 4x scope in great condition for 27 bucks which I then sent to the factory to have it gone over since that is free life time warranty. An other time bought a Fender Mexican made Strat for 25 bucks I played that one on stage for 3 years until I had to sell it because of a money crunch. The deals are out there you just have to keep looking.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

That's what i'm talking about Jh45gun, thank you!

These people running the tag sale could care less. They work there too and also did not recieve any bonuses so why should they even bother? They are not going be rewared one damn cent even if they knew what the real worth is and most likely would have bought them themselves and put em on ebay or somewhere else for a profit.

Belive me the Rockefellers if there any left are not in need of the money, you should see that estate.
Score one for the little guy!

Thanks for posting :D

Black Wolf,

I ran an ad one time stating that I would buy old coins.  On several occasions, I have had people bring me fruit jars full of coins, and sell them by the jar.  I bought a quart jar full of silver dollars for $2.00 each., etc.

I have found a lot of things with my detector, but this is a lot less work!

When I was a student at Michigan State I stopped at a garage sale while going on a donate run. Turns out it was one of the assistant football coaches let go under Bobby Williams. The wife had said they just wanted to clean out before they moved. I picked up a Citrus Bowl duffle bag, warm up coat, 3 game footballs and a jersey for $15 bucks. Walking down the drive way a guy offered my $50 for 1 football. I passed.

I gave her my phone number incase she wanted to get rid of any more "junk". I still have all this displayed in my sports room. "...another mans treasure."
