information and value 0f P A Reinhard rifle
« on: April 01, 2009, 03:02:46 PM »
Hope for some help from you all. I am not into black powder myself but a BP rifle is at a local estate auction this weekend and I need some info on it concerning history and possible value. The auction bill says it is a .45 caliber rifle with a hex barrel and a brass inlay stock that was a confederate rifle. Any help would be appreciated.

$100-$10,000...

Not trying to be a smarty pants but that's not enough info...

Hex barrel...Does he mean octagon???

Be very careful when buying "antique" guns...Unless you are an expert, you might
be buying a gun that has been worked over and sold as a family heirloom that gggdaddy
carried in the Civil War...There are many fakes out there and some were doing this as early as the 1930s...It really makes it tough unless you are very experienced in appraising these things...

btw...I've been studing these guns for over 35 years and I'd be scared to spend more than a few hundred bucks on a gun that might not be what it's billed at...

Flintlock,
Thanks for the reply. The information I posted was what was on the sale bill so that is all I know. I had not heard of this rifle before and none of my books had any information on it. More curious than anything,

I wonder it it's a Whitworth...They were .451 caliber and had a twisted hexagonal bore so they
used special bullets...Google it and you'll see some examples...

btw...They were used by our sharpshooters in the South...

Just to update those interested on what was represented at a local auction as a P.A. Reinhard rifle. The only markings that I could find was "P.A. Reinhard" which was on top of the barrel about a fourth of the way down but behind the rear sight and four digits that were at the butt stock end of the barrel but in paired sets one set below the other. In person the rifle was in very good condition overall, heavy (I would guess 14 lbs.+). The stock was tiger maple with many brass inlays and patch box, wood to metal fit was very good. The barrel was a large diameter hexagon barrel. The rifle had the target style butt plate and double set triggers which worked. The hammer was a bit smaller than most rifles of that period and cocked quite easy. To me it appeared to be a purpose built target rifle except that it had traditional non-adjustable sights with the small thin blade style front sight. With it was either an original mold and powder flask or at least period correct. The sale was near Wichita, KS and the buyer was a collector from Ohio who paid $1,050.
