Ruger Mk I - removing rear sight

Which direction do I need to drift out a rear sight on a Ruger Mk. I 22 auto? 

Also, how does one tell if a sight can be drifted out (tapped) or when a "sight removal tool" is required. 

Your sage advice is greatly appreciated.

I don't believe the dovetailed rear sights on the Ruger .22 semiauto pistols are directional.  You can make an index mark using a "Sharpie" permanent marker, and give the sight a tap using brass drift and hammer to see.  I use Locktite when reinstalling.

Generally, the smaller front sights such as on Mauser military and Enfield miltary rifles, Parabellum and Walther pistols need a sight pressing tool to avoid damage in removal/installation.

I gave it a few taps from right to left, but didn't put a reference mark so I couldnt tell if it moved or not.  I'll try indexing and try again.  Good tip on using Locktite when reinstalling as well.
