thanks for the info Talon. So you're going to do a super redhawk with moon clips also? I've looked into this and decided to have the .45 lc cylinder done so I can swap to .454 cylinder when i need to shoot .454 casull, and use the .45 lc cylinder for .45 acp. This does 2 things. 1st it eliminates the need for extra care in cleaning the burn rings inside the .454 cylinder from firing shorter cases. As you probably know the .454 is a high pressure round and even from normal use the spent cases can be a real pain to extract.
2nd, as the pressure is so high, I'm concerned that using moon clips in the .454 cylinder might be a safety concern when firing .454's? I'm not exactly sure on this but it seems it might be risky in terms of head case support. I do know of at least one super redhawk in .454 that was modified for moon clips though, so maybe its o.k? But I never did get the owner to say how the gun worked out.
Any thoughts on this? thanks, jammer
well .. can't say I know much on the problems from shorter cases, I've had lots of 357/38 shooting, if cleaned after shooting
never had a problem. the 454 with moon clips can shoot the 454, 45lc, and 45acp. but with the long jump I understand
I can't expect minuet of bullet hole :-) ... to be honest I haven't had the chance to shoot 45acp's out of the baby. I thought about
another cylinder but with my luck I'd leave to go hunting and have the wrong ammo for the mounted cylinder. I know not a
big issue but Murphy's law :-)
I had a ankle operation in aug, and since it was work related my bosses would take a dim view of me spending time out shooting :-(
but I'm just about recouped and can get out there put the baby through it paces. In talking to others there isn't a problem.
with 454 and moon clips. you might want to talk to TK Custom ( the horses mouth as it were :-) .. do the research and look
to the people who do the work if you like the answers, there you go.. I'm calling Pinnacle tomorrow about the work on my 454 ..
I'll post when I get it back ..
Talon
good luck with your conversion post when you get it done :-)
