Barnes 300 gr Expander MZ
« on: November 20, 2009, 01:40:00 PM »
Has anyone used these bullets on whitetails?  I know it will kill a deer was just wondering about their expansion.  I just like the 300s better than the 250s.

Added info, I'm getting 1525 fps with 100 grs of goex ffg.

Thanks, Kyle

I've taken a number of deer with this "older" design loaded in 12ga Federal slug loads (not the same dia or weight, I know). Performed flawlessly - excellent accuracy, expansion and blood trail (large spray pattern behind where deer was standing). Since then I have used the 285 spitfire and 290 TMZ in my 50 cal ML. Last year took 6 point at around 10 yards with Spitfire and 90g TS at 1600 fps (Neck shot, dropped in his tracks, but no exit wound and never recovered bullet???). This year 90 yd shot at doe, she went 15 yds, but no blood trail and exit wound was smaller than entrance. I know I should be happy, but I hunt in some thick areas and a good blood trail is very important. The 290 TMZ was pushed by 100g BH 209 at 1780fps (chronographed). Called Barnes and they said at higher velocities the petals initially open fully and then may fold back to sides, thus a smaller exit wound. I will go back to the ole 300g Expanders. I believe, but will confirm, that the bases of the petals are thicker and keep them from folding to the sides too easily. Hope this helps.

haha with a barnes expander, there is no worry about expansion. They open up into a beautiful flower.

A few years back I took a buck with them at about 30 yards and the exit hole looked just like the entrance hole, about the size of a penny.
It was the last time I used them.

I now use the Hornady XTP 300 grain and have very good expansion and nice big exit hole.

Last year I used a 250 gr barnes out off a 458 Socom.  The entrance and exit holes were about the same size with little blood. This year I used a 130 gr 308 barnes out of a pistol around 2700 fps.  The holes again were about the same size, but I had a very good blood trail and good internal damage with almost no blood shot.

It's one of the best muzzleloader bullets ever made...For some reason my Knight prefers the 300 over the 250 as well, but my brother's Remington prefers the 250, go figure...

We've killed 30 or so deer with these bullets with no problems, accurate, good exit wounds, reliable, no problems...I don't believe we have had a deer make it 75 yards once hit with one of these...

I've killed about 10-12 deer with the 300's and 5 or so with the 250's, never recovered one so I can't say what they look like, but massive internal damage and blood loss are all I need to tell me they work. Blown through a few shoulders as well, they really tear them up.

I live in condor country and I think the non lead bullets were designed to punch a hole through the deer and not leave a blood trail so they can run off and die and feed the Condores around here ;D  Nim
