Thinking of trade Ruger No 3 for Savage 24V
« on: June 14, 2009, 01:12:07 AM »
Looking for opinion/ballpark value...
Friend picked up 24 V .357/20 combo in great shape and I have a Ruger no 3 .22 Hornet also in great shape...thinking about even up swap.
Close in value?
Thanks

That's the most desireable 24V and the least desireable #3 IMO.  I'd still try to see what they are going for on Gunbroker before I traded.  #3s have gotten high.

If it's a swap you both desire and are in agreement with, don't be overly concerned with the monetary values so much.  Why people make this such a huge issue when in the end of the trade, both parties get what they each want.  Money is not everything. Decide if the Savage is worth giving the Ruger for.  If so, it's a good deal for you.  If it's more $$$ than desire...

Personally, I would not consider trading a No. 3 in any caliber for a Savage. No. 3's are not easy to find now and are a classic rifle.

the Savage would be a fine utility gun and i'd love to have one, but i would think the Ruger has a bit more value,money-wise...I doubt that i'd make that trade...you'd be trading down, but if it's what you want, have at it...Mike

With very little cost you can rebore the #3 to any caliber and cartridge you wish for. No I would not make that trade. The #3 hornet can be improved to a K for a cracker jack varminter.

I think you'll be disappointed in the Savage, they are not in the same league with Ruger quality, that flimsy jury-rig extractor is especially troublesome and the later models are the worst, they cheapened the design again and again. The first version had a true mono-block breech with both barrels inserted into a solid steel one piece breech block. Later, although they still "called" it a mono-block the locking lug was brazed to the bottom of the shotgun barrel and the rifle brazed into a groove on top of the shotgun barrel. The present version is composed of five parts brazed together and they still call it a mono-block! I guess they don't know what the term means, or just don't care.
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.
