I have had both a 9mm and a 45 acp and can say in all honesty I cared for neither all that much. For concealed carry I prefered a snubbie revolver with a 3" barrel and carried under the left armpit. When I carry a full size handgun for home protection or general carry in the field it is a .357 magnum with a 4" barrel and 158 gr JSP or xtp's. Match this with a Marlin 1894C levergun with a peep and firesight front insert and you are one well armed dude. The .357 Magnum is the queen of the handgun rounds. Big enough for any defensive role/food gathering and small enough for almost anyone to use effectively. With a couple of speed loaders in pouches on the belt and the 9 rounds carried in the rifle (plus the advantage of the longer range) the aurgument over the higher capacity magazines of the autoloaders is relatively small. I harbor no ill will against semi auto users. They have a purpose and a huge following. Some of us old relics still like simplicity of the old wheelguns. ;D

As many others have said, the 9mm with good ammo is plenty.  I tend to practice more with the 9 also, because of the reduced ammo costs.

years ago we had a gun shop / range owner who was a retired col.
I was looking for a handgun for protection , first one , so i ask him which he liked best a 3in J frame 38 or a Colt 45 . he said to be honest he would carry the 38 and wish he had the 45 if he ever needed it .
The 9 is like the 38 in some respects .
That was back when the 3 in J frame with heavy bbl cost $104.00 so ammo has improved alot .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

I LOVE my 1911 45
also love my 357 and 44 revolvers

but 13 rounds of 9mm 124g +P HP (gold dots) in a very small and accurate 9 is what I carry most of the time
S&W M&P 9 compact
had a bunch of "carry" guns and have a jframe 642 with 135g +p golddots as well

I bought a Walther PPS slimline 40 last week and my wife the M&P 9 C
after shooting it a bunch I sold the PPS and bought another M&P 9C
rather have 13 rounds of 9 than 7 of 40
the Walther was accurate but the M&P is "easier" to shoot fast and accurate

look at this image and see if there are any glaring winners

it was fine, different but fine

fast mag reloads were less than ideal though
