Land trappin otters??
« on: September 09, 2003, 09:29:37 AM »
I read with interest Trappinmans article on trappin otters on land in trail sets.  I also have listened to others talk about setting up otter scat/trash piles.  I am going to try that this year and am wondering if others try this as well.

When setting up a scatt pile (already established by the otters) and making the set I was thinking of using #3's.  What type of lure or attractant would one use for this?  Perhaps a little fish oil on the scat?  I know this would also pay off for a few incidentals as well maybe k-9's cats or coons.

Any ideas?
Thanks

Tim:
If I were to trap otter on dry land, I would use the plain old dirt hole set.  I've caught dozens of otter over the years in hole sets made for coyote along waterways.  If fact, otter were so nuts over one experimental coyote lure that it became Lenon's Otter Super All Call.  Would catch the same otters over and over with the same lure.  Dirt hole sets and their variations will harvest just about any animal.  The hole always represents food and curiosity and when an alluring scent is added, BINGO!

A #3 would be a good trap on a drowning rig.   While dirtholes work- if you have any incidentals, they play havoc with lure/bait.   While certainly trail sets take incidentals- a little thought to location of the sets cuts down and eliminates many of the pain in the butt incidentals like rats and coon.

If otters make trails, they are using them and if they are using them you can force them and if you can force them- you can catch em'  8)
