22 caliber plinker load
« on: April 19, 2009, 02:56:20 PM »
I have heard of light loads for 22 caliber such as 22H,222,223.
Has anyone used any of these with non gas checked bullets? ???
Can you give me any data? Gas checks are outreagous now to buy.

Thanks
Alan

It'll depend on what the twist rate in your barrel is, and what bullet you're using. That said, my Contender 22 Hornet with its 1:12 twist will stabilize a RCBS 55gr. bullet at 1050 fps driven by 1.2 gr. Red Dot. A 222 or 223 would be the same with maybe 2gr. or so, you'd have to try it to see what happened. I use Lee liquid alox for lube, and if I read the wind right it's no problem to hit the 1/5th scale smallbore rams at 200M with this load off the bench.

Red Dot is good powder for this, it's very bulky and very easy to light off. No fillers needed, and very low SD even at such low pressures.

Thanks
Sorry
I have a Contender in 22H 14" & 21",222 10"&14",223 10" and rifles in 22H T/C 21",222 remington 788,223 ruger #1.I don't have rates of twist handy.

With components so hard to find I am looking for any and all alternatives I can, to still go to the range, before I become an outlaw by "Obamination's" laws.

I just don't want to have a round do the nasty in my barrel with Me close by.

Just looking for plinkers to soothe the nerves or take a squirrel or two safely, and not lead to barrel too bad, and not have the expense of gas checks.
