new barrels

   Tim,
     I see where you recommend polishing a brand new barrel with Flitz. I went by the local shop today and got some to work over my new .44 barrel with. On the package it says NON-ABRASIVE. I was just  wondering how this stuff can work if there's no abrasive in it?

Hey Rusty.  It's probably one of those "New and improved products".  Man, I hate that.  Every time you get something that works, they gotta fix it for ya.  I musta had it happen a dozen times with different stuff.  Oh well, whittle down a palmetto frond, soak it in used motor oil, rub it in sand and it ought to do something to your bore .......don't know exactly what   Don't junk the rifle till ya call me.

Its such a mild abrasive that it takes a microscope to see the particals ,that also applies to the rough spots in the barrel . First thing to do is clean it real good with something like Wipe Out or spray break cleaner and then run a few patches of the polish back and forth down the tube , makes a world of diffrence .

RIF, I just got a new 44 mag. I ran some patches with USP Bore Paste followed by a few patches of Flitz. I don't see the Non-Abrasive on my tube, but I've had it a couple of years. I was thinking "maybe wrong" that it is N.A. I've been doing this with the last few guns I've bought. Don't know if it helped on my 44 barrel but it is shooting into the same hole so far. I will continue this practice on future barrels. Just took my buddy to the gunshop last night and helped him pick out a SB2 44 mag rifle. And I put a second one in layaway. Gonna try shooting with one in each hand like my pistols  Now I have someone to go to the Handiholic meetings with.

It's such a mild abrasive, some wouldn't even consider it abrasive! Varmint Al has a simple test for comparing the abrasiveness of Flitz and JB, Flitz is slightly more abrasive, but it's still a very mild abrasive.

The big danger with using abrasives of any kind in the bore is letting the rod touch the bore, particularly at the muzzle and throat, using a good bore guide will prevent that from happening.

Flitz also makes a polish thats not in the tube but more of a Wax type polish.. this one is not abrasive at all, but a very good water proof for your stocks. If it's in a tube and thick it should be "the good stuff" ya need. I picked up a bottle of the non abrasive Flitz and it worked great on my Laminated stocks to water proof them. Went through one of my worst hunts with this laminated stocked 30-06 and the gun was soaked, my Lams were/ are perfectly fine.
