Black powder and hollow base bullets.
« on: April 14, 2009, 03:46:54 PM »
Question for you black powder loaders.  I have not used it much in cartridge arms, but am about to load up some.  I'm using a hollow base mold for 45-70.  Do you guys use a felt between cartridge and powder?  I'm wondering about compression with the hollow base, it seems likely to get an air gap.

Thanks in advance for your expertise.
Ben

Just realized there is a forum just for this after I posted.  So many choices at G.B.!!!

If I am correct and you are useing loose powder there should be no problem as the powder will compress to fill the base.

If you are useing the pellets then I really can't say as no one has ever really answered my question about air space around the pellets when loaded in a case the size of a 45-70.
If useing a hollow base bullet then there would be that much more air.
I know it is being done but am a little concerened about it myself.
Maybe someone here will clearly answere this question.

Will be using loose powder.  I have loaded flat base before, just not the hollow ones.

Like I said, I don't think there will be any problem with loose as long as the load is compressed.

I've been using a hollow base in my 50 with loose powder and no problems, and reasonable accuracy.

Thanks for the replies.  This is one of those things not in my reloading manuals.  I'm just a little more careful with black and black subs than with smokeless.  I've already seen what a poorly seated bullet will do in a front stuffer, and the same can happen with a cartridge.

Still no true answer to this part of the OP.

Some one must have the answer!
