Anyone ever cut their 760/7600 barrel down to 16" or so?
« on: February 19, 2009, 12:12:17 PM »
Just wondering what the accuracy difference would be.  I would like a short, quick handling woods gun with an overall length of 36 inches other than my Winchester 94.  Thoughts?  Experiences?

I have an 8mm Mauser that I cut down from 23 1/2" to about 19".  Accuracy improved in my case because the new crown was better than the worn out original crown. But the handling of the bolt rifle became really sweet as a walking woods rifle. I forgot to mention that it was a sporterized Mauser, not an original. Forgetting about the crowns, I don't think accuracy would suffer at all.

I also had a 7600 in .308 which the barrel seemed a bit long for a pump rifle. However the rifle shot very well, stupidest thing I did was to sell that rifle. I am thinking that 16" is a tad too short, maybe 20" might be nice.

I've pondered this course of action myself with my M7600 .338-06 rifle.  After handling the factory M7600 carbines I think that 18.5" is ideal.  The carbine still looks good and is very easy to handle.  Depending on the chambering I think that 16" may be a bit short.  It might look odd as well - I really don't think that the extra 1.5" lopped off will make much positive difference in carrying or handling.

I hunt with a Model 7400 Carbine chambered in 06. If there is any sacrifice in accuracy form the full length rifle a buddy has, I've not seen it. Additionally, an ex co-worker hunted with a .308 Model 7400 that had been cut back to 17 inches of barrel. On the one shooting foray I took with him and that rifle, it was as accurate as the longer barrel rifles present. Just don't let Bubba cut and recrown the barrel.

About 12-15 years ago my son and I got a pair of Rem 7600's in 7mm/08. We both wanted a fast handling woods deer gun, so we cut them down to 18 1/2". Both guns actually shot tighter groups with the shorter barrel. I mounted mine with the shorter youth synthetic stock. This is a great compact deer rifle now. Now my wife or grandkids can use it when I'm not hunting with it.

I have the 760 as a Carbine in 30-06 and it is a very good shooting rifle. It handles nicely and since all of my shots are close I am not worried about the loss of velocity incurred with that barrel. I am in the process of having a 742 rifle cut back to 18 1/2 inch as well.

I cut my 308 - 760 to 17.5 and my daughters 260 - 7600 to 19", and her stock 1" to fit her.  Accuracy is great in both.  From a tree stand here in Western Pa. both rifles are pure poison on whitetails.  Have a NIB .280 - 7600 not sure what I am going to do with it.

16" is too short in my opinion, and you'll never be able to use it in Canada if the opportunity presents itself. I have a 760 'factory' carbine in '06 and the 18.5" barrel is just right for me. Have 2 other 760's that are going to get cut down to 18.5 as well. The shortened barrel makes the rifle swing so much smoother.

I have one of the Remington 7600 patrol rifles, 308, 16" barrel.  I love it, it is handy getting around with in the woods, treestand, or blind.  It is plenty accurate and of course reliable.  With the Remington R3 recoil pad it recoils like a 243.  It is louder than a longer barreled rifle, you don't notice it when shooting at game but off the bench (the range where I usually shoot has covered benches) it is quite noticable.  There is also a more pronounced muzzle flash with the shorter barrel but that is not really a concern for a hunting rifle.  If you hunt using an ATV the rifle is short enough that it doesn't stick out past the racks/handlebars which is a nice added benefit.

I have been planning on cutting my 7600 back to 18" ,I Had thought about going down to 16" but also felt it may be a tad short. I should have got the carbine when i ordered it from Grices. It started out as a  35Rem., Sent it straight to SSK and had it rechambered to 358 Win. added a thumhole stock set and it has become my faverite rifle. ;D
BIGGER and faster is always better !

I am thinking of having mine cut to either 18.5" or 20".  I haven't made up my mind on how short I want to go.  But I definitely wouldn't go to 16, plus you have to make sure you keep it over 16".  16.001" will do.
