« on: April 17, 2009, 02:22:06 PM »
I had posted on the nef/h&r site about a load for my grandson. I rcvd some good info, but I can t find any powder around here[Miss} All i have is H4350 and Varget. I will be using the 85 gr. sierra btsp. I need a mv of approx 2500 to 2700, for the grandson. Does anyone out there have a good piece of data using what I have given. Thanks  Jim

Take a look farther up under the H&R forum.  There is a post going on there for light loads in .243.  Might be able to find something you can use.

I think H4350 will be too slow for light loads - especially with a light for caliber bullet. Varget may work.

i was working up a load and found exactly what you want.

h4350 with the 85 grain sierra gives 2500 to 2700 fps with approximately 36 to 38 grains.

the max load is 46 grains so the 38 or even 40 won't be too much for him. i was getting almost one hole groups at 50 yards with that reduced load.

Matt

With H4350 being a slower burning powder did you have any issues with the cases not wanting to expand properly and getting crud around the case necks ?

The reason I ask is that I have 8# of it coming for my 25/06 & 270 and if it worked Ok , I'll try it in my 243 also .

I have had excellent results using H-4350 with the 95 and 100gr bullets in a couple of .243's. I do not think you will be unhappy. Start low and work up, seemed that the better groups were on the top end around 41 - 42grs with the 95's and about 39 with the 100's.

Good luck with yours.

they seemed to expand to fill the chamber just fine.

i just checked my notes...it was around 40 grains as well...the 36 is the minimum load for that, thought i should not start you in the middle.

the max was 44 grains, as 44.5 and 45 showed pressure signs. so i think you should be fine between 38 and 41.

stimpy-

i chose 44 grains as my max and it shot the exact same groups with that as it did 41 through 44. i have never seen that happen before, ever. it did not care which load it was.

this rifle also did that with varget as well. the load i settled on was 37.5 varget with the 85 grain sierra. it shoots 1/2 MOA at 100 yards.
