Handi Rifle Problem
« on: April 19, 2009, 06:25:49 PM »
Hello friends.

I just found this forum and seems like there is a great deal of information available here on Handi rifles. I bought a Handi rifle few years ago and on the second trip to the range, the hammer got stuck. This rifle has only seen a box and a half of ammo through it. I was disappointed in the quality so I threw it in the trash and forgot about it.

Yesterday, during spring cleaning I found the rifle and thought about getting it fixed and sending it to the company for a .223 barrel for paper punching. Is it worth getting it fixed or should I just buy another rifle? Having no prior experience with their customer service, can I expect them to fix it free of charge?

Appreciate your input in advance.

Well they can certainly fix it for you.  I think the warranty is for 2 years.  I'd say if you want to get a 223 barrel fitted then sending it in with a note would be the thing to do.

You've got a few alternatives.  You can hang in here a little while and Tim or someone will tell you how to fix it.  As mentioned, you can send it into the factory, warranty or not, and get the other barrel.  You can sell it complete or part it out here on the H&R forum classifieds, and you can buy the .223 barrel here also and save the factory turnaround time.  Meanwhile, you should read the FAQs at the top if you haven't already.  Welcome and good luck.

If you don't want to fool with it, you can just send it to me, and I'll take care of it for you.....what caliber is the original barrel?   ;) ;D

Even if it costs a couple bucks to fix it, it is better than throwing it away, whatever that means. I tend to believe that if you explain the situation, that the factory will work with you.

What do you mean by the hammer being stuck??
You can't pull it back or it won't go forward when you pull the trigger?
Give us some more info.

Handis are easy to work on once you get over the anxiety of tearing it apart, they're very simple, it's probably got a broken hammer spring or possibly striker & lifter(transfer bar), both can be replaced using the Perklo trigger hone download info in the FAQs, parts can be ordered from Brownell's, or have H&R repair it while they do a free trigger job and fit additional barrels.  ;)

Thank you friends for your responses.

To answer a few questions mentioned above.

The hammer does not go all the way back to engage the transfer bar. The spring seems to be fine. I am looking at it right now and when the hammer is moved back, I can see the trigger move a little but it falls short of cocking.

The original barrel is a .30-06.

As you pull the hammer back slowly you should see the transfer bar rise up behind the firing pin just as the hammer clears the transfer bar, does it do that? The transfer bar should also be against the firing pin when the hammer is back, if it flops back, it's defective or the transfer bar spring is broken or not installed properly. Any way you look at it, it's gonna have to be disassembled to repair it, download Perklo's instructions if you want to repair it yourself, or make arrangement to ship it to H&R for repair or order barrel(s).  ;)

Now that I examine it closely, I can see the transfer bar rising just a little bit as the hammer goes back but does not come all the way up. There is a metal protrusion just under the release lever arm which seems to be kissing the transfer bar and stopping it movement upwards.

+1
Working on these Handis is low hanging fruit! Like Tim said download
the Perklo trigger work info from the FAQ's and you should be able
take your Handi apart, diagnose it, order whatever parts you need,
and put it back together in no time!

A couple of yrs. ago, there was a rash of transfer bars hanging up and falling out. Lean the rifle to the left and it should cock.If you lean it to the right, the transfer bar will hang up or fall out in your hand. There was several (including a brand new one of mine) that done the same thing. They were'nt peened on the pin correctly and they would slip partly off and hang up.Some just fell out in your hand. Hope this helps.  Digger
