browning 1885 low wall in 243

One of my best friends, of long standing, just gifted me with a browning 1885 low wall in 243win. I've been wanting a liter gun and since my mobility is limited now, stand hunring or running the beaches in my skiff is about all I can do. I usually shoot BLRs but they are getting heavier, at least they seam to be gaining weight.

I tried the contender carbines, but they lack class. This browning has class and is a good shooter as well. My friend collectes these single shot brownings. He has 7 or 8. Told me to take my pick. So I did.

I once had one and wish I'd kept it. Mine shot most everything I fed it well. Most groups with it ran between 0.4" and 0.7" and it was a rare experience indeed when anything shot more than an inch at 100 yards with it. The absolute best shooting ammo in it was Hornady factory loads with their 58 grain V-Max. That grouped under a quarter inch every time I shot it. Super accurate stuff.

I used IMR3031 mostly in it for lighter bullet loads and with the Hornady 65 V-Max it was one wicked varmint/predator load.

Congratulations! You now own a very beautiful rifle in a great caliber. I personally own a B78 in 6mm Rem. that will shoot less than 1 inch at 100 yards all day long. Work up a good load and enjoy. I love to hunt with mine because I can admire it during the duller moments. Singe shot rifles just have better lines and a facination for me.

Nice rifle - one of the most accurate I have found. The lightest single shot has to be the NEF in non-Varmit barrels should you need to go even lighter. The Weatherby Mark V Ultra lights are really as light as the name suggests - kinda refreshing to see some truth in advertising. I for one would never feel you are a taker - friends should gift back and forth rifles - in particular the ones that are sitting in the back of the safe because while they are nice they are not what we are into at the moment - and they say women are fickle.

Well i took a while to get my 1885 here but it fineally came a couple weeks ago. Shot it last week and it's a shooter. Liked federal 100gr hi-shok loads. Those and the remington 80 gr cor-lok was all I had on hand.

I'll work up a handload soon as my brass and dies arive. I've got bullets, hope it shoots partitions good. Regards,
