Glock 30
« on: August 24, 2009, 05:53:25 AM »
Hi Guys anyone any idea what approximately the muzzle velocity would be out of my glock 30 (.45 acp) with standard loads? I am using either 200 or 220 grn bullets. And what ever the speed is, is this enough to get reasonable expansion using a hydrashock or gold dot for defensive purposes?
Any thoughts about this will be welcome. My goal is to get the best man stopper available for my chosen weapon. I do have the ability to hand load as well.

Thanks in advance

Dobson.

It appears no one reading this has chronographed  a Glock 30 with your choice of loads, Me included. I'll make a SWAG. The GD 200gr is a +p at around 1000fps. I'm guessing that figure was taken from a 5" barrel. Even from the shorter mdl 30 barrel it should be going fast enough to expand at 100fps or so less.
Speer also makes a load they claim is optimized for a short barreled with a special powder and bullet.

Information from the book Living With Glocks. Velocity is from a Glock 36. It has the same length barrel as the Glock 30. UMC Hardball at 810, Cor Bon 230  JHP +P 900, Black Hills 185 JHP 931, Black Hills 230 JHP +p 930, Winchester 230 SXT Ranger 864, Winchester 230 SXT Personal Protection 833, Eldorado Starfire 230 805. Some of the same loads out of a 5 inch 1911. UMC Hardball 850, Cor Bon 230 JHP +P 953, Black Hills 185 975. The other loads I listed were only tested in a Glock 36. Hope this helps. A 230 grain JHP that still runs at 900 fps or more is a pretty impressive load  out of a 3.8 inch barrel. I have both the Double Tap and Buffalo Bore 230 grain loads that I carry in my Glock 36 and they hit hard.

Good information!  Your information confirms my estimate of 900fps or so from the 200gr Speer in the mdl 30. Can't put my finger on the information at the moment, so take it for what it's worth The Gold Dot in .45acp is designed to expand at velocities as low as 700 fps or so. I have a mdl 36 loaded with the Ranger SXT stuff. Maybe I'll get around to running a couple over the chronograph some day. The .45acp is a pretty formidable round even out of a compact pistol. I think any of the modern hollow points would do anything you need them to do.

Thank you both for exelent info. Much appreciated. I was begining to think i had chosen the wrong gun. Changing a gun here in south africa is a long slow difficult process, not just popping to the shop and passing some green backs over the counter. I must say this firearm is everything i expected it to be and am now VERY happy with it. Thanks again for putting my fears down. Yes i did read up about it before i put the ball in motion to get one, but just had some stupid doubts that i hadnt done the homework properly.
Thanks again
