Where the heck are all the rings?
« on: April 23, 2009, 11:51:01 AM »
Who's hoarding all the super tall rings?

I've called about every outfit I know that sells such stuff and have placed extra high rings on back order with some and still cannot put a scope on either of my ARs cuz I can't find a set of rings tall enough to work.

Anybody got a set tall enough they want to part with permanently or just temporarily until mine arrive from Talley? Gary said they are gearing up for a new super tall ring just for ARs and that he'll ship me a couple sets when they are available but that's not gonna be in time for the PD shoot.

Anyone here who can help out an old fat man in need?

I bought some Weaver extra tall rings at Walmart recently.

+1 on the Weaver rings (Extra High). They were the Quad Lock - not the best, but they would work at least temporarily. I mounted a 50 mm scope with them and had a little room to spare. They are priced right too - $9.95

Welcome to the Obama Syndrome  Oh mighty Graybearded one. You can't buy squat right now. There isn't enough stuff in inventory any where. I'am a small dealer and anything that shoots or can be shot is almost non-existant. Your Ar rifle parts are 28 weeks backorder unless you are in Law enforcemnt then it is only 6 weeks. And forget ammo I can't come up with any reasonably priced 22 L.R. let alone 223 rem or 308 Win. Exactly what are you looking for I might have some rings. Only because I bought them 1 1/2 years ago.

I'll stop by Wally World and take a look next time there.

I called an order to Midsouth today and every single ring listed in the catalog that might be tall enough or nearly so was out of stock.

GB, all guns and ammo are hard to get now. Anything AR related is impossible to get....<><....:)

Bill, I have some Weaver See-thru rings, they measure .736" from the top of mount to the bottom of the tube if that's tall enough, they're yours if you want em, I don't use see-thrus, they came on a used scope I bought.

GB , I had to go with a set of risers and medium QD rings on ARs because of the shortage. Only place I can find Warne sells everthing for full retail. Forget em...................... I  think cheaper than dirt had some cheap ones might not be high quality

That "might" be enough Tim. I just measured my Burris High rings and that's a good quarter inch more. I'll give them a try if you'll send them my way. Even if just temporary I'd like to get the R15 ready for the PD shoot for everyone to see and play with.

I've sure found nothing so far that comes closer. Gary said he'd have them around the end of May but I don't think they'll get here before the PD shoot from what he said.

"Who's hoarding all the super tall rings?"

Most likely the same guys who are hordeing all the the stripped AR15 lowers and parts kits.  All I can say is HA HA whenever production catches up :)  Supply and demand.

What type scope are you trying to mount?  I used some Millett windage adjustable rings on both my ar15 and my .223 ultra varmint fluted.  They fit a 50mm objective w/o any issues whatsoever.  That is both a bushnell banner and a BSA catseye...

My longer term plans call for having a pair of scopes for the ARs. On my 18" barrel R15 I currently have an EOTech Holosight which works out fine but is a more or less closer range option. I hope to also fit it with a lower power scope and was hoping to do it with QD rings. On my 22" R15 the plan was a high magnification scope for PD shooting and long range work perhaps a Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24 and also a lower magnification shorter range scope both set up with QD rings.

Right now what I'm trying to do is at least get the 22" barrel R15 set up for the PD shoot next month. I have a variety of scopes I can mount for the purpose but when I used the tallest of the Burris Signature Zee rings on it I cannot get my head low enough for looking thru the scopes.

Tim has the high set of see thru rings on the way that hopefully will work and I also managed to locate some riser blocks from Bushmaster that hopefully will arrive in time. Between them perhaps I'll at least get it set up for now. Longer term I'll eventually get them set up as I want them when things become available.

Quick detach rings for the most part, are a fickel mistress.  Unless you get some that are torque downs, like what the military style aimpoints have, you'll have trouble finding a set that will return to absolute zero everytime.  The ones that do Badger Ordinance, Nightforce ect, cost a pretty penny.

Now if your just wanting to take the scope off in a hurry that is a different matter.  But it will usually result in having to re-zero the scope the next time you mount it.
