70's Model 70 Super Grade question
« on: March 25, 2009, 06:20:46 PM »
I was wondering what years the Winchester Model 70 available with the Monte Carlo stock and angled black forearm. I've talked to people who think their ugly, but I like the way they look and I'm thinking of trying to find one.

AFAIK, that should be the Model 70 Deluxe, made from 1964-71 (IIRC).

Friend of mine has one of these and the wood is excellent.  I thought the rifle may have come for a custom shop it is so pretty.

These were called the XTR DELUXE model.
Some books call them the DELUSE model.
I have 9 of them all with the black forearm tip.
The checkering did vary a little over the years but all were very similar.

They did not have to be a SUPER GRADE to have the black tip.

They were made in a wide range of calibers.
Mine are: 25-06, 243, 30-06, 264mag, 300Win mag, 7mm mag, 338mag, 270, and a custom 225 Heavy Varmint.
I think there were a few other calibers also.

Not sure as to when they quit making them.
I have one made in 1980 and one made in 1981.

Like you I think they were the best looking stocks Winchester ever used on a standard production gun.

375 H&H and 22-250 varmit heavy barrel calibers also. Mine shoot well and while not often greatest looking the wood in the stock is very stable.

Here are a couple of pictures. I'm a sucker for a glossy wood stock.
