« on: April 29, 2009, 05:55:24 PM »
I just bought a lee 459 dia mold  405 gr hollow base mold. Dose anybody use them .
I just made a few up, they look really good. I am going to try these in my marlin xlr 45/70.
What type of lube should I use. New to the cast bullet making.

Mike, I shoot these unsized from ww and grease em up with Lee liquid Alox  although there are a number of good lubes out there that will work, I find it's just easier for me to swirl them around in a plastic tupperware container and let dry. Iload them up in my HR BC and have'nt had any issues with leading. Have fun! ;D

I too have been shooting these of late, and it's becoming my favorite.  I've loaded them from less than 1000fps to over 1700 with no issues.  Firing into a plastic bucket of water, even at the highter velocities, the base has held up well.  I tray lube for these, as my lubrisizer sizes to .457 and they shoot better as cast.

They work really well in my 45-70s. Cast from stick on wheelweights, I run them through the lubrisizer to .460, lube with Pearl Lube (equal parts soy flakes, Crisco, and toilet bowl rings) and load over 65gr. Goex CTG. Very accurate, and the carry enough lube for long strings of fire without wiping.

Thank you for your reply's. Have not owned my Marlin 45/70 xlr very long,
I realize that Its cheaper to reload for it. $32.00 $44.00 a box for factory
ammo when you can find it. So I'am going to reload for it. I have most of the things I need.
more cases, powder, very hard to find due to shortages, one sporting goods store was told by powder supplier
could be 2 years before regular shipment of powders. What powder should I stock up on , IMR-4198, H-322, IMR-3031
Your suggestions please

Thanks MIKE

The powders you mentioned are all doable.  I've been using Varget for my mid range to hot loads, and have started experimenting with Unique for low power loads.  Then there is black powder and subs. if you know how to load them and don't mind the cleanup.  I've had great success with Varget in moderate loads.  Very accurate.

Graf's has AA5744 in stock. You will like this powder in your 45/70.

Thank you for the info. I hate being a pain.
Does anyone have any good loads using IMR-4198.
with the 405 gr hb lee bullet
I was thinking about starting with 30.0 grs
30.0 grs - 1195 fps
33.0 grs - 1380 fps
And I have some 405 gr gc coming in this week.
Need some loads for them too.

That looks like a good range for .45-70 Marlin M1895 level loads according to my copy of the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook Third Edition for comparable bullet weights.

The loads for HB vs gas checked bullets should be comparable.
