Cheap Gun.......
« on: April 28, 2009, 09:01:46 AM »
Ok I know it is cheap, with a frame made of pot metal, but I picked up a great little shooter at a garage sale this past week-end.  My wife dragged me along to look at children’s books to donate to an elementary school summer reading program.  While there I strolled through the garage and saw a Brayco 9mm on the table, the lady said it had belonged to her father in law, and had only been fired a few times, it came with one full box of ammo and 43 shells in another box, (it appeared to have had only the seven rounds put through it) I asked what she wanted for it, she replied $50.00 for the gun and bullets.  Since the bullets were worth almost that much I took it. (The boxes were marked $7.99 and were purchased from a local hardware store that has been out of the gun business for at least 15 years.)

Yesterday I took the gun out to the farm along with a couple of boxes of my 124 gr hard cast reloads.  I set a target up and backed off about 25 feet, I was amazed at how accurate the gun is.  Even with my old eyes, shooting off a pad on the tool box of my truck I kept all my shots with-in the 10 ring on the target.  Shooting off-hand I kept all the shots with-in the 8 ring.

I know this is a cheap pistol, and probably won’t hold up to a lot of shooting, but it goes to show that a “cheapie” can be effective as a self defense weapon when money is limited to purchasing something better.  It won’t be my carry gun, but may find a place around the house to serve as a back up so the more desirable (for the thieves) can remain in the safe.

When it stops shooting, check the firing pin, it's probably broken. Those guns are famous for breaking firing pins.

What the heck, ya got almost nothing into it - if it stops working you can throw it away or melt it down and cast a belt buckle out of it!

If it lasts for a couple range sessions it's cheap entertainment - anything beyond that is just a bonus.

Some things can be so inexpensive they are worth a gamble--is what I read into RB's post. If it shoots it is just that much more fun.
There is a difference in doing something just for fun, and having it work out, than takeing a gamble and counting on it to work out.
i would have bought it also.
Blessings

Some folks just know a bargain when they find it.  I would never rely solely on this gun for my personal defense because I can afford, and have a wide selection of quality pieces.

The thing that really made the buy attactive was it was near new in the box with all papers and only a small chip of paint knocked off the left side of the slide.  As I said, the ammo was worth at least half of what I paid for it. ::)

The point is, some cheap guns will perform fairly well, and beat the heck out of a sharp stick when the chips are down.  It is simply an option for those that have baby diapers, baby formula, house payments and can afford nothing better. As someone said, it is cheap entertainment! 8) 8)
