IT'S LOUD!!
« on: February 01, 2009, 05:04:33 AM »
I am putting new strings, cables, and a sight on my bow. With the original stuff if was loud as a shotgun when arrow released. I have limb savers, string and limbs, and a dampener on it, what else it there to do to it to hush it up some? Do cable dampeners work? It is an older PSE Split Limb, 27" carbon arrows, 72# draw. Also I am going to a sting loop in lue of an Ultra Nock XL, any comments? Thanks, Chad

Make sure everything is tight so the components don't buzz from shock. Use a heavy enough arrow to absorb the bow's energy so it doesn't get turned into sound instead.

Graybeard's right, usually when a bow is loud something is loose, or the arrow is way to light weight.

An old PSE is not going to be very quiet anyway but follow the above advice and you should get it quite a bit quieter. All the Sims stuff works pretty well and you might also look into getting a string stop, they end the shock when they capture the string. I have a new Bowtech Admiral with one on it and it is super quiet (and very well behaved I might add). The two biggest noise makers for me have allways been sights and rests. If you get a fall away rest make sure it doesn't make a loud whack when it bottoms out at the shot. Sights with fiber optic tubes are bad about being loose and making noise so make sure nothing is loose there also. HTH

Chad - for all it is worth, take your bow into a Pro-Shop and have them help you out, the noise differance is night and day when proper dampaners and string stops are put into place.  http://www.keystonecountrystore.com/Bow_-_String_Silencers.html

Ultra-Nok's are loud, the loop will make a difference. I use stick on camo felt between the accessories and bow to help with some of the noise. Another trick I've used is to make an audio recording when you're shooting, sometimes you can detect what is making the sound if something is loose.

A quiver will also make a lot of noise on the bow. The hood can act like the sound board on a guitar.

The best silencer I found for my PSE thunderbolt is made by Diamond (bowtech). It's called Black Ice. ;)
When I saw the title of this thread, I knew it was about a PSE. I too tried everything on the shelf to quiet mine, with little luck. Very fast bow, but very loud. I have heard that the closer you are to peak draw weight of the bow, the quieter it is. Have you tried aluminum arrows, slightly slower arrow speed might quiet the bow a little also.

One thing that I havnt seen anyone mention is what style rest you have on that PSE. Some people with PSE's have a tendency to set the rest prongs (if its a TM hunter style) a little bit to low and they slap the shelf. Seen that 100 times or more. Granted I agree with the BowTech solution (buy one) but if you cant afford a new bow and have to fix yours....Follow all advise given so far and also check your rest. It could also be a weak spring in the rest itself. Also about the best advise so far that is frequently overlooked was Grey's about the too light of an arrow. Try a heavier arrow and see if that works if all others fail. Also that Ultranoch belongs in the trash receptical. String loop all the way. Other than that, PSE's are pretty much loud anyway. You can quieten them somewhat but not a whole hell of a lot
