New Barrel Shot Yesterday!!! OUCH!!!
« on: September 01, 2003, 11:18:48 AM »
We went to the range yesterday to put a few rounds through my 300 win mag ss barrel. I went with intentions of getting it on the paper and pretty close and got a lot more that that.
After dialing it in ,i started to see some great groups.Shooting off a bag,(no vise today) and factory 150 gr Core lokt bullets ,i had several touching. I didnt have any groups bigger than 1.25 @25 yrds(im sure it will do better in the vise or bi-pod and sandbags) and the conditions werent verygood to shoot.(No vise, very hot and slow shooting) Overall im very pleased with it.
The reason for the 25yrd shots is that is was told to shoot that distance while breaking in the barrel and also i would be able to get it dialed in quickly.I was also told to clean the barrel after each shot ,which was a pain in the arse.It took a long time to shoot those 20 rounds.
Another thing i noticed was the temp of the barrel after shooting 3rnds.That ss barrel will get very hot.I had to let it cool down between each round of shots.
Also, This was the first time i have ever shot a 300,so the kick took a little getting used to.My 7Mag doesnt kick that hard....OUCH!!

 I imagine that caliber does pack a good wallup!  I have one in 7M-08 and it kicked like my 7MM Sako.  I put a Sims recoil pad on it and it was like nite and day.  My barrel (24") would also get very got after about 4 shots, but when it was hot it shot fantastic, but would string upwards for the first 3-4 shots.  I sent it back to Thompson because of that and they are replacing the barrel.  No reason to keep shooting at 25 yds. . . the gun doesnt know the difference. Site it in about 1" low at 25 yds and you will be very close at 100 yds.  And I would not clean it nearly that often.  Infact, if you read other posts here, many shooters will not clean their rifles at all until they are going to put them away for a long time.  I cleaned mine real well before shooting it the first time and then only after every other shooting session.  But this is always a big debate.  By the way, a Past recoil pad may also help you deal with that recoil .  I gotta wonder how guys handle those bigger calibers?

It can't kick any worse than a 12 gauge Federal Expander 3/4 oz slug sabot slug moving out at close to 1900 FPS.  Or maybe it can?

Have not tried any rifle barrels yet but I will.  Plan on getting a .308 soon

Hey guys,
I've got one of the.375 H&H barrels for my Encore. It kicks a bit but shoots very well. My wife shot a caribou with it last week.

Will do, thank you Longwinters. I'll have a pic or two next week, she shot another with her Omega 50 cal. Both at 90 yards.
