460 S&W rifle barrel...considering one.
« on: April 30, 2009, 11:52:32 AM »
Just wondering if anyone has a rifle barrel chambered in 460 S&W?  I think they’re some Pro Hunter barrels out there chambered in it but if you have a factory or aftermarket barrel what has your experience been.

I have one MGM barrel and I think I’m going to get another one…this time in 460 S&W.  If I go with one it will be a 20” for blind/treestand hunting, would be a great round for the brush.  I have a 24” 375 Win barrel that is accurate and a real thumper love it but this caliber just intrigues me.

Thanks in advance.

I have the Katahdin 20 inch 460 w/aprature sight. With the Hornady 200 gr ammo it will almost cut cloverleafs with my old corrected vision at 75 yards. Recoil seems a little sharp and stout to me, but not unmanageable. I'm using the walnut stock, I'm sure the flex tech would help but the walnut just looks better to me. With 454 rounds my point of impact was about 10" lower at the same distance. Before I traded the 15 inch 460 for this 20 I shot a few 45 cowboy loads that were so high at 25 yards that the sight couldn't move far enough to correct. Haven't tried any 45 out of this 20 yet but there seems to recoil way less with the 454 rounds

Thanks for the info...recoil doesn't seem to concern me as much as performance.  I have a 12 ga slug barrel, 375 Winchester and 9.3x74R barrel for my Encore...if I can shoot these I hope the 460 wouldn't be worse.  Matter of fact I know it couldn't be worse than the 12 ga slug barrel, that is a thumper.

I didn't even think about being able to shoot the 454 in the barrel that sounds like a great option.

I'm into Contender carbines but if I were to buy an Encore I would order it with a 460S$W barrel...

I already load for the 45 Colt and 454 Casull so have all of the components except for brass and would love to also be able to shoot a 460S$W.

I have a 20" barreled LSI Puma M92 in 454 Casull and can easily push 240gr bullets to 2300fps 360's to 1860fps and 405gr to 1650fps I'm thinking you should be able to get another 200fps with the 460S$W in an Encore.

I have a H&R in 460S&W, the 20" BC Carbine barrel pushes the Hornady 200gr FTX factory ammo over 2850fps.

Thanks all...I have a few bills that have to get paid and then one of these will be made for my Encore.
