Weaver or Bushnell variable for my 218?
« on: June 30, 2009, 05:09:56 PM »
I was planning on getting a Bushnell 2-6 but now I'm thinking of pushing the budget a little further and getting a Weaver 2.5-8x28. Any advantages to the Weaver?? It will be on my 218 Bee. I have almost no experience with pistol scopes.

Most first time pistol scope users find it a little frustrating...patience, it will come.  The Weaver will be a little more forgiving as to field of view and the Busnell will have the advantage in eye relief.  It's pretty much a trade off....I'd personally lean a little toward the Weaver(actually, I'd probably try to find a used Burris).
BTW - You're gonna love the Bee!  There's not a lot of us using 'em, but those of us that do love 'em!  ;D :D ;D

I'm not sure how you are planning on using your .218?  If the bulk of you shooting will be off of a bench, the recoil is so slight you could easily use a rifle scope and gain a few x's for the same amount of money.  I have several light recoiling rounds set up with rifle scopes and really like them.  The eye releif is short but the sight picture nice at the higher magnification.  I would not reccommend a rifle scope on a high recoiling round, the scope ring can leave a somewhat painfull (sometimes leaking  :o) bump on your eyebrow with a big boomer if you do not pay close attention.  Don't ask me how I know  ::)

Best regards, Mike

Use a rifle scope with the 218 Bee. The best value scopes are 3X9s, get an AO if you can. I use a rifle scope on all my Contenders (I have 4 centerfires). The Hornet, 32-20 and .221 are no problem, the 6.8 SPC is a little stout but I hold it down on the bag and make sure I don't get too close. The Bee is perfect for a rifle scope.

Thanx, Russ

P.S. Pistol scopes are a pain, the field of view is small, it's hard to find the target and my arms never seem to be the right length.

Thanks for the comments guys, I appreciate the differing perspectives. I settled on a Trophy 2-6 that I got a good deal on from another member here. I also have a 357 mag barrel so maybe I'll move the Trophy to that one eventually and try a rifle scope on the bee. The whole Contender pistol experience is new to me so I'll have fun figuring things out.

ralfus says; "The whole Contender pistol experience is new to me so I'll have fun figuring things out."

Russ69 says; "Way to go. I think that's why we all love our Contenders, we all are marching to a different drum and the darn things are sooooooo much fun."

Thanx, Russ
