Scope help
« on: April 30, 2009, 06:23:36 AM »
I am looking for a scope to use on multiple barrels on my new handi rifle.
Here in Kalifornication it seems everything is the tacticool style and I am turned off by it.
One place had Barska scopes and touted them a lot.
Has anyone ever had any experience with Barska?Good or Bad.
Don't waste your money.
Work ok.
I am only an ocasional shooter and would appreciate any help you give.
Can afford most anything  so price isn't the reason for asking about Barska.

Wow sorry bout that I am just seeing it for first time. I am surprised no one else responded tho.

I consider Barska JUNK and wouldn't take one for free.

If you are talking about buying one scope and moving it from barrel to barrel you should rethink that plan as it's a very bad one. You'll need to resight each time and you'll use up more ammo that way than the cost of a scope per barrel. Plus you'll never be sure if you have it sighted in or not.

Bushnell Banner's are good low cost scopes and so are Mueller scopes tho not as cheap as the Banner. Some like Swift and Simmons tho I'm not among them. I've heard more bad than good about BSA but the one on my air rifle is working fine. They have several price points and their lower priced ones are like Barska just junk but the higher priced ones seem OK on low recoil guns.

And to show that I can have an original thought, I don't care for Tasco's either!   ;D

Before Tasco went bankrupt and were bought out by Bushnell their World Class and World Class Plus lines were made in Japan and were of excellent quality. They were keepers. But just prior to the bankruptcy they changed to China or some such place for even the WC scopes and they became junk.

Since Bushnell bought them out I've not had a lot of experience with them but they did donate a bunch of them for a PD shoot a few years back and from what I recall the folks that got them were satisfied with them. I suspect tho they are like most cheap scopes these days. Still they might be the equal of the Banner line at least in the higher price point of the current Tasco line.

Mostly I use Bushnell Elite 3200 or 4200 or Leupold VX-II or VX-III scopes plus I have a Mueller APV on one of my varmint rifles.

I like Leupolds when I am flush with cash, when I am on the poor side I go for steel tubed weavers or vintage Lyman's{American made} Obviously used scopes

GBO,
Let me state my position.
I have never owned a scope!!
If the Handi-Rifle I purchased had open sights I would not be buying one now.
That said I tried to do my homework on scopes.
I looked at Leopould , Burris , bushnell , and Barska web sites!
Comparing the specifications on all of the manufactureres I found little or no difference in their claims.(except in price)
I asked on this site under Handi rifles and here on the optics site.
I also asked the question on the castboolits web site.
The answers I got were to say the least unflattering.
Everything from why did I buy a junker rifle to start with to If it ( the scope) cost less than a thousand it's junk.
I am beginning to think no one has ever tried a barska scope as It doesn't fit their image!!
I am also not sure most know what I want to do anyway.
I don't shoot paper.
I don't shoot at 1000 yards.
I do not kill anything I do not intend to eat.

After all of that what I wanted was a scope that is reasonably good to 250 yards so I would be able to decide if I even wanted a scope period.
A decent gunsmith can remove the ramp and install open sights for me.

So I thank you all for giving me your predijuces and dislikes , I will be sure to try out the Barska scope since everyone here hates it so much.
Heck I might find it's a pretty decent scope, but Thats just one old guy with bad eyes opinion

Suit yourself. No I've not owned one and will not. I have seen reports from lots of folks who have and not many reports have been positive. Sadly you just cannot produce a quality optical instrument for that price point.

I've given you options based on my personal experience with them that are worth owning yet low cost as well.
