luck with turkeys
« on: April 19, 2009, 08:27:54 AM »
Anybody do any good? I'm not hearing any birds at all. The area I hunt is small(well the property is small, the land around it is several hundred acres) so I can't cover a lot of ground and try to get one to gobble, so I did all I could which is set-up in several spots and call, hoping that one was close by and would come in, but no luck. I know the birds are in the area, but I'm sure not hearing any. I can't really tell if breeding has started or not, I would guess that it has, and is why they have shut-up, but the weather just before opening day wasn't good either so ????

What kind of luck is everyone else having?

I try going about 9:00 in the morning.  Your birds may be refusing to fly down or tightly knitted with their ladies.  By 9AM a little strange loving can be mighty tempting.

I got to go out Saturday morning.  I had limited time and tried a new place.  Had a hen fly down to the decoys, jake and 2 hens.  She was telling the jake all about it but he had a headache LOL.

I heard a gobbler on another ridge and one in the front field.  He busted me when I was walking back to the truck.

I'm gonna try to get out mid week when the rain calms down a bit.

Still no luck and not hearing any birds at all on the roost. I don't know if they have moved out of the area or what. I did see some hens spooked by something, but I'm sure not hearing any gobbles. I would think the breeding cycle is about over, what are you guys seeing?

I won't get back out until Saturday.

From talking to people I'm convinced that they are still henned up and probably are back in the woods scratching
in the leaves for food.

I have heard gobbling.  About 3 different toms last Sat. AM

JonD,
You may have to hunt for both of us this year!

I went out this morning and got kinda wet.  Tomorrow AM the same.  Rain most of this week.
On top of that we are trying to finish up building a house by 1st wk of June.
I may just have to hang it up for spring season this year.

I did hear a tom back in the woods this AM somewhere around 5:45.  Started raining around 6:00
and he closed down.  I went to the house.

I'd sure like to have some skillet fried turkey!!!

I'll second the skillet fried turkey.  ;D A good mess of fish sounds good too, I think I'm just going to go fishing instead of turkey hunting, I think I'd have a lot better luck ;D

Went out Friday and did talk to two toms but they won't move at all, today no luck at all. I did come home with a couple of great looking ticks though, but after you skin and bone them, not much meat.
