WOO! FINALLY!!!
« on: May 12, 2009, 11:59:54 AM »
Finally got a bird last Saturday!

The last three years I have killed one within an hour on the first day.  I was starting to think I was good at it.  This year threw me a curve.  We had 5 days of 90+ degree weather at the start of season.  I think thats what threw me but I'm not sure.  I hunted the 27th, 28th, 2nd, and the 4th.  In those four days I probably only heard 5 gobbles.  All off of our property. I know there are birds around there.  I see flocks of 50+ turkey all the time in the winter.   The first day I found two jakes out in the middle of a field by themselves.  Figured it'd be easy.  They didn't care a bit when I started calling.  Just worked their way out of the field.   I was really starting to get frustrated.

Last friday I did a lil better.  I was on a flock but it didn't work out.  They weren't gobbling so I tryed to use the fall "scatter tactic."  Almost worked - hens went one way and the gobblers went the other (how often does that happen!?)  But unfortunately when the gobblers came back it was about 100 yards up the hill from me.

I got in the woods Saturday with my brother.  It was almost depressing.  Not a single gobble or yelp anywhere.  We walked around checking fields before heading back at 8.  Earliest I've ever came in.  We ate breakfast and went back out.  While walking down the road talking, I walked over to the other side of the path so that I could see into the field sooner.  When I did I broke the ridge so I could just barely see down the hill. I caught movement.  About 60 yards down the hill was a gobbler.  Just looking at me through the HEAVY brush. By the time I raised the gun he was starting to leave, but it was too late for him.  9.5 inch beard and 1.5in spurs.  I was relieved.  Just shows that you should never give up!

Note - NEVER PICK UP A FLOPPING TURKEY BY THE LEGS!!!  I've been doing it for years without a problem.  Keeps them from tearing up their fan.  But when I grabbed this guy he spun, digging his spur into my trigger finger.  I have a 1.5inch gash.  It's not very deep but it still hurt.  I'm just now starting to be able to move it again (I couldn't have typed this with it sunday!)  I think I may try grabbing them by the neck.  I've seen others do this.  Maybe it'll work out better.

Congrats!

Well, I was gonna start a "FINALLY" thread, but I see you already started one. I FINALLY tagged a bird this morning. Not sure what he weighed, but he had a 9 1/2 inch beard and the most awesome spurs of any bird I have taken (>1"). My son slept in or it would have been his first bird - dang! We've been out several times but I haven't been able to get him to connect yet. One more chance next weekend.

Our place has been loaded with birds this year, adding to my frustration. Every morning I went out I have heard gobbling and have seen birds. Just couldn't get one close enough until 5:45 this morning.

You may want to see about getting a tetanus shot. I got spurred a few years ago and a good friend who works for the local health department pointed out that turkeys do a lot of scratching in the dirt. Suffice to say the nurse got quite a laugh about my reason for being there!

That is the longest shot I've ever taken at a turkey.  I used to stay within 35 but those 3.5's will reach out there if you need too!   I witnessed a friend shoot one with my gun last year that lasered exactly 82yards!   I was one of those people that truly believed 35-40 was the absolute ethical limit but that shot made a believer out of me. Afterwards I spent some time shooting targets and found that the gun will hold a "reasonable" pattern all the way out to around 65 yards.  It will put a few pellets on the target every time all the way out to 85 but I wouldn't try it myself.  Just not enough pellets on there.

Next time I shoot it I will get some pics to prove it.  I wouldn't have believed it before I tried it myself.

Leatherstocking, you're probably right about the tetanus shot, but I seem to be fine.  It healed up within a week and is now only just a lil bit swollen.  I probably should have gone but I just hate hospitals!

Yeah, probably no need to worry. I probably didn't really need it either, but I think I was overdue anyway. Mine was more of a puncture though too. If your's bled out, you are probably fine without the shot.

glad you got one!
No luck for me this season- heard gobblers and hens almost everytime I went out just not within range. The last day I even had a hen walking around my setup, didn't see me at all 20-30 feet from me! She stayed there about 20 mins. too. Even with that the gobbler wouldn't come in.  She must have been some old hen nobody wanted I guess.
