Memorizing long complex works

Are you good at memorizing long, complex things like bible chapters, works of music, history books?  Do you have any tips for doing that well?

If it has more than three to five words I can't memorize it never have been able to.

Well I can tell you what I do, but it hasn't worked for anyone else I know.  I simply read it twice.  Look up any words I don't understand.  Then I say it over and over in my head.  I may have to check the paper once or twice, but after that I can just close my eyes and see the words in my head.

  Usually not but I guess music is an exception - lyrics anyways.  Have a TON of song lyrics memorized and some bass tabs to some.  As for works of writing, no.  Easy way is somehow set them to a musical tone or some pre-existing tne.

Putting it to music can help. I remember in confirmation classes we were taught to remember the books of the bible by singing them. I can still remember them that way.

Writing long, complex passages down on paper helps me memorize them.

It can be good, but it has its downside as well.  I don't forget all the stupid facts I've learned.  In converstions I embarrass myself often by bringing up trival things related but not so related to the topic. People always ask how did you know that?   I actually remember where I learned it.  I can remember one such occasion about babies.  I brought up that the first baby born on what is now US soil was named Virgina Dare.  When asked where I learned it I laughed and told them we all learned it in 4th grade history since we all went to the same school. 
I don't know what it is. I have been asked if I have a photographic memory, but I don't think that is it.  If I just read it I often don't remember it.  If I actually take the time to 'learn' something, not just know about it but understand it I will never forget it.
