Friends don't let field gunners shoot target shotguns
« on: May 10, 2009, 04:12:45 AM »
I have been shooting skeet with a relatively heavy target shotgun. Fun.

Then I switched to my much lighter field gun. Can't hit nothin' on crossing shots. I'm having to relearn my swing with the lighter gun.

I use the same shotgun for skeet that I use for birds.  To me Skeet and Trap are just practice for bird hunting.

Yes I've shot on leagues, and at fun shoots.  And I shoot just as good a scores as the guy with the $3,000.00 Browning Citori, using my $300.00 Stoger Condor.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Sourdough, You must be a really fine shotgun shooter. Because I'm convinced the reason I miss so many birds is because I don't have a $3000.00 shotgun.

Thats my story and I'm sticking to it ;) and I'm not letting my wife read your thread....... ;D

I shoot a 20g O/U Classic Winch. (101) for both birds and skeet.
When I go to AZ for the winter month I use a borrowed 20g Franchi Auto a very light and whippy gun. Frequently over swinging slowing down to get the right lead and missing the clay. Besides that Franchi has a terrible trigger.

My O/U is at least 3/4lbs heavier and has a much better weight
distribution and it swings very much better. A gun like that is much easier to shoot skeet and birds with.

Another thing is a good trigger which is usually part of a good shot gun. Long and creepy triggers are not producing good scores
in neither skeet or field shooting.

Short barrel guns with most of weight to rear as opposed to being forward are not conducive to good scores at clays games but aren't impossible to use either. At skeet I find I actually do better with $1800 Browning Citori field guns with 28" barrels as well as or better than most others even including a roughly $20,000 Krieghoff I once had. It was a truly beautiful gun with the best wood I've ever seen on any gun of any type ever even in photos. I shot it well but in honesty no better than my Browning White Lightning guns.

If using a 12 gauge I find I do better with a Remington 1100 than most any other and it is what I fired my very first ever 100 straight with over 30 years ago.

I think it's just a case of too many guns. I got the target gun specifically and only to shoot target games. I let my son use it while I used the field gun and found that my shooting with the field gun had deteriorated badly.

I've had a similar experience with target pistols. When I use one gun a lot I just stick with it because changing guns requires a bit of reacclimation.

As for the target gun, I must say that Winchester Select is a heck of a good gun for the money. I got the trap gun and then added the kind of chokes you can screw in and out with your fingers. Works fine for all target games. I really like it a lot.

Sorry to read about the Krieghoff. It was a comfort to know somebody with a truly fine shotgun. I like to look at the trule fine guns and I'm glad they are out there.
