Hakim owners??
« on: September 12, 2003, 12:07:09 PM »
Any Hakim owners here?  There seems to be a rash of accidents lately due to just shooting any ammo without adjusting the gas valve to it.  With some of this ammo not being good for semi-auto's too is another problem.
I heard of the turk not being good also the greek stuff too.  I have shot PMC 170gr SP ammo and Yugo military surplus FMJ ammo mainly along with a few turk rounds(lucky) with no apparent problems.  I did plan on shooting the cheap turkish 8mm ammo in the beginning thats why I bought the Hakim in the first place.  You can blast all day for little cost.(ammo) In a few of my hakims two clicks from fully closed seems to be the norm but I go thru the process of adjusting the valve from fully close anyway on each different gun I take nothing for granted.   BigBill

My Hakim adjusting process:  First if the valve is loose take it apart and anti-seize it so it remains free, they can freeze up over time if not kept lubed, they have very close % threads.  Now after the valve is lubed I turn the valve fully clockwise(closed) then loading one round at a time I open the valve one click at a time counter clockwise until the gun cycles(ejects the spent case) then i load two rounds to see if it ejects and loads with no problems if it doesn't come back far enough to load the next round open the valve one more click counterclockwise(more gas) so it can open the slide more.   This gun requires careful setup for each brand of ammo you are using.   Please be safe and follow the setup when changing brands of ammo.   Its just part of understanding the guns setup.  These are awesome shooters and provide hours of pleasure when done correctly.  Besafe enjoy!!!

All I can tell from what i'm hearing it sounds like the gun is firing out of battery or pulling back the spent case too quickly(breech pressure 50k) blowing out back thru the magazine and sending hot gases shrapnel at the operator.  Damaging the gun stock and the operator in some cases.  So far most have been lucky and not seriously hurt "thank God".  Most cases has been using the wrong ammo not ment for semi-auto's and not adjusting the gas valve to the ammo your using.  On this gun you want the gas valve open just enough to make the gun cycle properly no extra gas is needed its not a plus!!  Its DANGER having too much gas in this gun it cycles too fast.  So PLEASE adjust that gas valve to the ammo you are using and use the right ammo I can't stress this enough!!!!!!              BigBill

When I bought my Hakim "Many years AGO",
I bought many hundreds of rounds of Egyptian
8 mm Mau. ammo with it. The ammo the Hakim was
intended to use was relatively mild 198 Gr FMJ.
This ammo was the most corrosive surplus I have
ever seen.
The gas tubes on the Hakim are made of some type
of stainless steel (?) but the block on the barrel that it
"Plugs" into is not. make sure that this area is not damaged
by corrosion. Inspect the inside of the wood forearm for
"Flash Burns" in the area of the Tube to Block connection.
(Sure Sign of a pressure "Blow By Leak"). If there are
ANY signs of burning, DO NOT FIRE IT AGAIN! until a
VERY reputable gunsmith takes a look at it.
If you find that you absolutely have to shoot it, turn the
gas off completely and use it as a "VERY COMPLICATED"
straight pull Bolt Action.
The Hakim (Lungman) is a sound design, but the quality of
workmanship and materials in the Egyptian examples
is not even close to the Swedish Examples.
Vir prudens non contra ventum mingit
"A wise man does not pee against the wind".

Me personally, my thoughts are the gas valve is too far open she is pulling out the case before the bullet is out of the barrel thus the shooter is seeing part of the 50k breech pressure some of the cases i seen are split at the back edge.  Everyone I have checked cannot possibly fire out of battery there is a small lever inside the stock that pops up if the slide is in full battery allowing the trigger to fire, as soon as you move the slide a little to the rear it puts this lever down and it shouldn't fire.  Its very important that this gun be taken apart and cleaned inside the stock one of mine had pine needles in it.  And make sure it functions properly and adjust the gas valve.  But if your in doubt like S.Sumner says have a gunsmith check it out to be sure and safe.           BigBill

The cases I seen were half moon blown out near the extractor groove. I guess it blows out the bottom  taking out the magazine with it.
