handi 223 makes long range kill
« on: May 11, 2009, 05:13:35 AM »
It happened at the 351yd mark.  I lazed 3 times for verification.  The Sierra 60gr HP did its job quite well with compete pass through, hitting both lungs and the heart.  longest kill I have made to date.

It's all a hot mess...........

Nice shooting - but don't you know that 223's can't shoot that far with any accuracy ;D

Yeah, that's why our military carries them.  They'll do it, but I prefer my .22-250.  Speaking of military ammo, I dumped a fox and coyote 3 days apart at the same spot and the distance as Swift One shot.  Only mine were done with a .308.

Those heavy bullets seem to work fine with some people.  Personally I think it's more the shooter than the gun when they say Handis don't shoot well past 300 yards.  I routinely shoot out to 400 yards with my .223 Ultra using 55gr Nosler Ballistic Tips.  I have a bunch of those Seirra 60gr HPs loaded that I use in my Contender.  I'll have to try them in the Handi.

I just got a box of 80gr Sierra's going to test them out in the Ultra.  If slowed down a little I think they will have no problem stabilizing.

Swift One:  The 60gr HPs work real well in both my contender pistol and the contender carbine.  They also shoot good through my newer Mini-14 Ranch Rifle.  They are one of the staple round I load regularly.  Just have not tried them in the Ultra yet.  Did try them in the first .223 Handi barrel I had, it would not shoot them well.  Keyholed at 100 yards, groups were bad.  Went to lighter bullets and it shot better.

the longest kill i made with my NEF 223 (heavy) was just a touch over 400yds, gave a woodchuck a 3rd eye.
As to the "223s dont shoot well past 300yds" i think, like someone mentioned, its the shooter, (for the most part). I wish i could have gotten my NEF with a tighter twist rate, say a 1:7 or even a 1:9. My AR is a 1:7 and that thing can really reach out there.

I sure would hate to be on the other end of that just so you could prove that point! :o

I see.  I like the 60s myself.
