Ready for the fall :):)
« on: August 08, 2010, 07:10:46 AM »
Well after doing plenty of range time I am now absolutely confident in taking a cloven hoofed animal from 0 to 100 yards with either my Lyman .54 GPR w/prb and 100grs Goex FFG and my TC .54 Hawken with Lee REAL bullet and same powder except 105grs volume.'The TC is dead on at the 100yd bullseye and the GPR I'm aiming 6" high. Now, you must realize too. This range of 100yds(max) is a "If I can't get any closer" shot. I can confidently drop a deer sized animal. I am all too excited about this years hunt as this will be my 1st traditional hunt. Not my 1st blackpowder hunt mind you as I've dropped plenty of deer with my TC Encore 209x50.
Cheers  ;) ;D

I don't quite understand your statement "and with the GPR I'm aiming 6" high". Do you mean you have to aim high to compensate for drop at 100 yards? If so there is a simple fix, just file down the top of your front sight to bring the point of impact up to zero. One hundred grains of FFg will drive a .530" ball to about 1600 fps, give or take a few. At that velocity sight in 2" high at 50 and you should be no more than 2" low at 100. Or to put it another way, zero dead on at 100 and you'll be no more than 2 1/2" high at 50. Either way you can forget about bullet drop from the muzzle to 100 yards plus a few more.
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.

Thanks for the great tip "coyotejoe". What I should have said was, "I zeroed at 50yds and to see how much hold over I'll need for 100 I fired a 3 shot group which showed and gave me confidence that if the opportunity were to arise that the deer will not come any closer nor I will be able to get any closer, at 100yds I can make the shot" ;)
I just might take your advice and try that, heck nothing like another day shoosting, yeehaww!!!
