SCCY Handguns

Wondering if anyone has any experience with SCCY handguns. I am looking for something compact for a CCW. I wanted a Kel-Tec, but no one here has them and it's mor than a month wait I have been told. A local dealer has SCCY's which is a copy of the Kel-Tec P11. The price is almost $200 less than the place that has Kel-Tecs in stock. He told me the SCCY are made by a guy that was a partner in Kel-Tec and parted ways with them It's a nice looking gun, just curious of the reliability.

Good grief! The SCCY has a suggested retail of $359.99 and the Kel Tecs in your area are $200 higher! Wow, I'd have to pass on both! I have a couple of P-11s, bought them years ago when they first came out. I paid around $200 each for mine. Over $300 for a P-11 is outrageous!!!

  The SCCY handgun here is going for $100 less than MSRP. It seems to be a nice gun, and very similar to the Kel-Tec. When I was quoted what I was on the Kel-Tec, I said no! All the guns here are selling about $100 more than they were in January of this year. I could have picked up a Taurus PT111 for under $300, now the cheapest one is $375. I'll keep looking around, and see if I can find a good deal. I don't have to buy today.

They pronounce it SKY. I was told the company used to go by SKYY. I have heard of SKYY pistols, but had never seen one until now.

Supply and demand. It's worked well in this country for over 200 yrs.  Maybe in time the demand will be more in line with the supply and the prices will drop. Till then I'm good with what I have. I seem to recall having heard of the SCCY before, but have never seen one. It does look a lot like the kel tec.

Iffen they used to be sumpin else and have changed the name I suspect the reason is so those who found out they were JUNK under the other name will not realize it's the same outfit and same JUNK under a new name. Just guessing of course.

SKYY seems to be an infringement on a Vodka product by the same name.
$350 is a lot of money too gamble on a product used to defend yourownself.
On the other hand it is pretty inexpensive for a plinker.

Well, I went to the gun shop to give the guns another look, and they had sold the three they had out. Probably a good thing, as I doubt I would have bought one.

Went out looking at another gun shop today, and stumbled upon more SCCY guns. This shop had actually used them, and the guy behind the counter claims he owns one. For $350, I left them keep it. He told they have sold over 50 of these pistols, and only one had come back. That one, the safety was broken. The guy said within two weeks, it was back in his shop repaired. He then mentioned that was a lot more than he can say for Taurus.  ::) He said they used to by SKYY, but was sued by SKYY Vodka for copyrights of the name. He spoke highly of the pistol and the company, but I opted for a new Ruger P95 for just a hair over $300. It was the cheapest by $20 I ahve seen including Academy SPorts.

For a plinker/home defense pistol, you're much better off with the Ruger. A pistol the size of the SCCY/SKYY is meant for concealed carry and not so much for the range. The Ruger, on the other hand is quite large and heavy, making it a great one for shooting and holding down the night stand. The one I owned, and the others I've seen, were stone reliable, and just keep on running! I'm referring to the "P" series, of course. No experience with the newer striker fired Rugers.

The guns themselves are made in the USA. I have handled a couple, but passed. I bought a Ruger P95 instead. Granted not a CCW, but that will come later on.

You will get a better resale value on the Ruger than on some off brand firearm, and be better protected if you have to use it for self defense.
