Took 444 Marlin hunting and bagged a Browning A-Bolt
« on: June 16, 2007, 01:31:00 PM »

I'm posting this here because this thread/subject involves a Marlin 444SS.  I posted it over at marlinlovers.com and thought you guys would like to hear about it too.

Late yesterday afternoon I decided to go to a place out in the Modoc National Forest where I do some deer hunting and I took my 444 Marlin SS with me. Since I wasn't primarily hunting but rather scouting, I took a couple of boxes of factory Remington 240 GR SP with me.

Well, I was walking along side a small clearing just inside the tree line when I spotted a coyote coming into the opposite side of the clearing from where I was. I stopped immediately and it continued toward me. I had raised my rifle when I first spotted him and when he got about 70-yards from me, I pulled the trigger. Hit him square in the chest and he just dropped dead in his tracks. Now, I don't take coyotes for the pelts so I went out to check on him and drag him over to the tree line to leave him there. Once I got him to the tree line, I sat down and leaned against a tree to see if anything else would turn up.

While I was sitting under that tree and looking around, I kept spotting a rather odd looking piece of what appeared to be a fallen tree limb leaning against a tree about thirty-yards away. Finally, my curiosity got the best of me and I went over to see what the strange looking tree limb was. Good Grief!!!! It was a factory, full camoflaged, Browning A-Bolt rifle in .325 Winchester Short Mag with a camoflaged Weaver 6X scope. The bolt was opened with an empty chamer but with one round in the magazine. The rifle had been there for some time as it was covered with rust -- especiall the inside of the action where the bolt had been opened.

We only have two small gun shops in town and only one of them sells Brownings so, I called the owner this morning, told him my story and asked if anyone had reported a missing rifle to him. He said that some guy had and I gave him the serial number and he checked and low-and-behold it was that guys rifle.

The story told to me is that the guy was out deer hunting last year, had stopped to take a crap, leaned the gun against a tree and that after he had dropped his load he had walked around the area for a bit to see if he could find any deer sign. When he decided to work his way back toward his vehicle, he couldn't find the rifle. Looked and looked by no luck. Even went back a couple of time over the last year with no luck.

So, I'll be leaving the house pretty soon to take the gun down to the gun shop so it can be returned to the owner. He is suppose to meet me there.

Just goes to show that you never know what you'll bag when you go hunting with a 444 Marlin. Oh, the Weaver scope is in absolute, perfect, as new condition.

I hope the guy is grateful.  Had you not been honest he wouldn't have been so lucky. Just in case he doesn't tell you: thanks for being a good person.  All that good clean living pays off.

I'd at least buy you dinner or a some ammo, or something.  Thanks for being honest, if he doesn't thank you.

I am reminded of something that happened to a friend about 25 years ago in RI. He was training Labs with a group of regulars and one of them had my buddies 1100 rem shoots live birds. Well the sky opened up and it started to come down in buckets. After a few minutes they decided to wrap it up and my friend loaded the dogs in his truck and turn to the shooter who was driving out and yelled have you got my gun? He smiled and waved and drove by. A few days later when my friend asked him about his shotguns return he was told it was left leaning against a tree where the shooting was done and that he never heard a inquiry about the gun.
After 4 days a rusty 1100 was still leaning against a tree at field edge in RI!

A few years ago a friend and I were shooting at our local fish and game association range and when we arrived, we noticed that there were a pair of rifles left on one of the benches, with no-one in sight.  If I remember right, there was a cheap Remington .22 (Nylon 66?) and a lever action of some sort.  Someone had left them there for whatever reason...

Well, we left them there and did our thing, shooting hi-powered rifle for a couple of hours.  No-one arrived while we were there, so I collected the rifles and took them into a shop in town that was affiliated with the range and sold memberships.  I told the guys at the shop the story and asked that they let the club management know about it, and that the notify me when someone claimed the guns.

About a week later, two identical rifles showed up in a private ad in the local buy and sell paper, and when I called I would get no answer (screening with call display?).  I can only assume that either the guy at the desk or the owner of the shop stole the guns and sold them.  When I followed up at the shop, they first told me that someone had claimed them, and later told me that they knew nothing about it.  The club said they knew nothing about it either and I do not doubt the club rep's word.

Quite depressing and disappointing by comparison with your story.  I tried to do the right thing and ended up getting screwed for my trouble, as perhaps the owner of the guns did as well...

Yes, but you can sleep soundly knowing you did the right thing.  I wonder if the same can be said of the other guy(s)?

This is the follow-up to my post.

"I met the guy that lost the rifle at the gun shop and returned it to him. He was happy to get the rifle back but wasn't happy with the condition but then what did he expect after leaving it out all winter? He said he thought the factory camoflage coating would have protected the rifle better but as far as I'm concerned, it didn't offer any more protection than if it had just been blued. He said he was going to return the rifle to Browning to see if they couldn't refinish it. Rots-of-Ruck I said. The places where the water/moisture had gotten between the camo coating and the metal was really really bad. Deep, deep pitting and even craters. I told him he might be better off just putting the rifle on his wall so as to have a center piece for a great hunting story."

EDIT:

"The thought never crossed my mind to keep that rifle and even if the guy had offered me something like a reward, I wouldn't have taken it. The experience of my afternoon in the woods and the circumstances of finding the rifle was satisfying enough."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Oh, one thing about the coyote that I shot. He was coming straight at me and when I shot, I hit him smack dab in the middle of his chest and the bullet went all the way through him front to back and shattered his right-rear hip but didn't exit. He was full grown and I'd have to say he went about 40 + pounds. As I said in my story, I used the factory loaded Remington 444 240 GR SP and I was/am quite pleased with it's performance. That said, if I had purposely gone out to hunt elk or bear, I would have taken my factory loaded Hornady 444 Light Magnum 265 GR FP ammo with me; however, with proper shot placement the Remington ammo would do just fine for either elk or bear."

No compensation, huh? Oh well.
Should of told him to leave the rest of his guns outside that long and see how they turned out!

That's the main reason I don't get camo knives, etc. Stupid me will drop it somewhere and never find it again! I can hope that I wouldn't leave my gun and not being able to find it, but the older I get . . . well, anything is possible. (Wuzn't exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer when I wuz young!)

You did the right thing, turning the gun in. Glad it worked out and they found the owner.

Now for my question.....Why on earth would you walk that far away from you rifle wihile in the woods?

I understand that he had to answer nature's call, but why move that far from you rifle?

Also I can't believe he didn't get some help shortly after loosing it and put on a full search until it was found. This was not a cheap rifle and scope. A few friends and a grid search would turn it up.

Some people just don't belong in the woods.

I once found a compound bow left in the woods like that. I posted signs in all the local shops about a found bow and general area/date and that owner could claim by properly describing it to me to convince me it was really his.

In less than a week I got a call from the owner wanting to know when he could drop by and pick it up. He sure was one happy camper to have his bow back. I know the feeling as I had my long time favorite stolen from me. He offered me a reward but I refused it. Just part of doing the right thing and taking money for doing it would have negated the good deed in it.

My Grandfather, a full blood Cherokee found a Winchester octagon barreled lever action 22, a cast iron skillet, and a kerosene lantern in a clay cave on the Verdigris River, in Rogers County Oklahoma. This was in about 1922. It was apparently a hideout for someone in the area that was "riddin the owl hoot trail". He hunted with that rifle the rest of his life. In 1961, just before he died, he gave it to me. The hammer spring had long since broken, and he used a piece of innertube stretched from the forearm back over the hammer. Looked like hell, but it worked. It and a single shot 12 gauge was all he ever owned, and he dearly loved to hunt.
Someone stole the rifle a few years after I got it. Man if that rifle could talk, and I had it back. :(

Speaking of missing rifles my Late Brother and a bunch of other cops were up in Utah where my Brother hunted for many years.
They had a along couple of guys from another department that they only new a little.

There was one older guy who was somewhat loud and bossy and a younger fellow from the same department.

As the week of the hunt progressed the various guys would go off from camp ,and one morning my Brother and a buddy of his were getting ready to head down to camp when they
spotted the older loud guy and his young friend setting down for a nap under some low cedars.
When they both fell asleep my brother and his buddy crept up on them and stole the rifles laying next to the nappers.
They retreated to their former look out and decided a nap was a good idea, they were
awakend by the commotion the older fellow was creating when he came up from his nap and found that some no good "locals" had stolen his rifle, my Brother said he was really finding fault with the poor young fellow for not staying awake during his "watch".

The hysterical laughter from the next patch of cedars gave them the first clue that they had been had.
Cops have a wicked sense of humor.

Unfortunately, the loudmouth is cut from the same die as most of the cops in Wichita. Absolute trash and a bunch of criminals, except for the scrawny college kids they've been hiring. The Sherriff's dept. ain't nearly as bad, and the KHP is top notch, except for my wife's idiot cousin.

I found an AK-47 laying in a dirt path going to a local shooting range on day.  Stopped at a gun shop on the way to the range and asked if anyone had reported a lost AK, answer was no.  The rifle had been driven over and the butt-stock was broken.  Checked at the same shop a few more times, still no-one had reported it.  After 2 months I had the owner of the shop call the cop-shop and tell them the story.  Seems the guy who owned it claimed it had been stolen after he had been out shooting, the owner told the cops I had been shecking on it and had stopped the day I found it.  The owner got it back and the cops warned him not to file a stolen report the next time he left it laying on the back of his truck.  DP
