Three sighted in and two to go
« on: May 14, 2009, 04:40:00 AM »
I'm just back from a shooting session on my range. I have three of them sighted in and shooting to my satisfaction. That leaves two to go to be ready well OK maybe three more as I'm gonna shoot a couple handguns and decide which of them to bring also for up close and personal shots. I'll likely bring my Ruger Super Single Six with 9.5" barrel and the .22 Magnum cylinder if I can get it sighted in and shoot well enough with the ammo I have on hand.

My little Model Seven Predator Fireball was just about dead on from last year. I made one minor adjustment and it's shooting touching pairs and since my ammo supply is limited I didn't waste anymore of it on paper. Like last year it will be a laser wiping out anything inside 300 yards even if I see only half a head sticking from a hole So long as the wind doesn't get too bad it's as good as it gets even way out there.

My Predator .223 is putting them touching at 100 and also required no action as it was apparently sighted in already even tho I didn't remember doing that. It wears a Mueller APV.

My SPS Varmint .223 that I didn't even shoot last year is stacking them on top of each other at 100 with the old reloads I had left over from PD shoot #1 so it might get some use this year.

My SPS Varmint .22-250 that I used for the long range shooting last year isn't behaving so well after the scope switch making me wish I'd not made the switch but I did. With my reloads it planted three in a nice tight equal lateral triangle but when I moved to the factory stuff that shot so well last year it started shooting all over the place. I decided to set it aside for today and will work on it another day when I break out the Remington R15 and the handguns. Dunno what was going on with it really. The first two appeared to go in the same hole either that or the second one missed the entire target stand cuz there were no other holes anywhere. Then I couldn't seem to get to close enough to call it a group after that.

Next time I'll go back to my reloads I guess and if they are still doing as they did I'll just sight in with them as I have as many or more of them than the factory ammo.

Graybeard, is that Rem R15 the new AR type that you got last Dec with plans for an EOtech sight installation?

I cant go with you guy's probably to include next year also but the shoots (and the food) are always a good read and I am happy for you.

Yes and no.

I bought two of the Remington R15s last year one with an 18" barrel and one with a 22" barrel. The one with an 18" barrel has the EOTech Holosight mounted on it. The one with 22" barrel is the one mounted with a scope the Bushnell Elite 3200 10X40mm tactical and it is the one going with me on the PD shoot.

I plan long term to have this one fitted with a scope for long range use, perhaps a low power scope like my Leupold 3X for shorter range use and an EOTech or Aimpoint as well for up close personal defense use. I'd like to get the scopes set up with QD rings so I can take them off and put them back at will with ease.

Wal Norm there is truth in that BUT the nut behind the trigger today was stacking them on top of each other with three guns and one wasn't cooperating. Dunno what was going on but don't think the nut behind the trigger was at fault today. I'll work it out next range session.

I took the SPS Varmint .22-250 back to the range today. I have two lots of factory ammo from Hornady for it one lot I bought and one they sent me at no cost. I've long since forgotten which is which. Both have 50 grain V-Max and should be identical as the description of them is but they clearly aren't. One has a four digit code and the other a five digit code. The four digits are common to both but one has more digits. Why and what it means I got no clue.

The four digit code ammo is all over the place and the five digit code ammo which I shot today and must be what I used last year at the shoot stacks them on top of each other. Weird.

At any rate it is now sighted in and the reloads I loaded last year shoot close enough to the same POI as the factory stuff at 100 yards that I figure I should be able to use both if needed.

I tried my reloads in the R15 today and all I accomplished was locking it up. I had to use the rubber coated handle of my claw hammer to get it to open to extact that round. I then dug out a few rounds of factory ammo and sighted it in. Two shots at 100 were touching. I wish I had a bunch of that ammo but don't. I guess I need to load up some making darn sure I full length size the brass for it. I suspect the ammo I tried today had been neck sized for a rifle I no longer have.

All rifles are now ready except perhaps the Wayne York custom .25-20. I'll try to get a load worked up for it so I can have an up close gun as well as it will be used only with factory iron sights.

I finally sat down and figured out the difference in the two ammo types and am completely surprised I failed to notice it sooner. BTW it was a four and five digit code not six so I changed that in the above post. That last digit is for the MOLY COATED bullet it uses. How the heck I failed to notice that I have no clue but for some reason I didn't.

I quit using moly a long time ago but I think what Hornady sent me was moly coated and for whatever the reason they are shooting nice tight groups and the same ammo without moly is not tho my reloads using Midsouth Varmint NightMare bullets without moly shoot about as well as the moly coated factory stuff.

I loaded up 150 rounds yesterday to try in my R15 to see if they will shoot accurately in it. The load is one that has shot very accurately for me in the past in other rifles chambered to .223 so I am hopeful it will shoot well enough but am not going to load more until I try them first.

Today it has rained all day. It rained much of the day yesterday.
