17 fireball Range report
«
on:

Due to the prairie dog hunt date getting increasingly closer every day, I made time to get to the range today. It took around 5 shots to get it dialed in to bull’s-eye but I finally got it.
These are factory 20gr accutip Remington’s. I love it!
100 yards and yep that’s a dime!

Well, one day in my garage I was messing around with some super glue, nails, and some masking tape when I thought...I better get someone who knows what they are doing to make a custom barrel. PM me and I will give. You the info.

If you would break down and hand load some you could tighten those groups up a little.

Nice groups, but you keep missing that circle in the middle of the target.

It is a stub, 12 gauge donor barrel
17 cal barrel. Twist rate is 1 in 9". It is 22.5 inches long and .810 dia. 4140 carbon steel. These were made by wilson barrel for Winchester and were sold to a guy in Connecticut at an auction.
I got it from this guy on Gunbroker.

What powder are you using for that load Larry? My Remington Model Seven Predator shoots like that with the factory ammo but one of these days I'll run out of it and am going to have to begin reloading for it. I have around a thousand bullets on hand I think and a large bag of extra brass over the factory brass that shooting the ammo will provide. I'm thinking about giving Bench Mark a try as all manuals I've looked looked in so far seem to indicate it as a top choice.

I really like the looks of a loaded 17 Rem Fireball Cartridge. They sort of look like a scaled down 6mm BR or Winchester Short Mag.

I've been using Winchester 760 because I use it in my 17 Remington with 30gr bullets. It is a little slow for the fireball, I get 3760 fps out of a 19 inch barrel using 20gr of powder and 20gr bullets. 748 would probably be a better choice. Larry

I have always thought this would be a fun caliber. And from the few I know that had the 17 Rem absolutely loved them.
I have had a lot of fun with the HMR's but wanted more power behind the little 17cal bullet.
I hope Remington makes us some barrels for this little guy.

This is what I got for the hopeful efforts , 223 Ruger Target Grey.
But shucks I missed that diamond in the middle too , and with all three rounds no less
guess I'll just have to keep trying
