triple seven load data
« on: March 22, 2009, 09:08:45 AM »
Hi... I'm looking for a cap and ball load using triple seven (ffg) granules.
The wad is a vegetable composition lubed with T/C's "bore butter". Thanks
.

Hodgdon shows some FFF T7 data, it's over half way down the page after you check the box and click get muzzleloading data.

Hodgdon 777 is not a black powder duplicate. That is, unlike Pyrodex, you should not use it volume-for-volume against black powder.
While 40 grs. of FFFG black powder can safely be used in the Remington .44, under a ball, the same volume of Hodgdon 777 would generate pressures higher than desired or safe.
Hodgdon advises to reduce all loads 15 percent, when using 777.
I first tried 777 in my Uberti-made Remington 1858 Army a few years back. It's powerful stuff.
Hodgdon 777 should not be used in any brass-framed cap and ball revolver. Brass-framed guns lack the strength to withstand the higher pressures.
Used with manufacturer recommendations, in a steel-framed cap and ball sixgun, Hodgdon 777 is perfectly safe. I use it on occasion and it's good stuff. I haven't found it as accurate at real black powder, but then I've never found any powder as accurate as black, especially in FFFG grade.

I use 777 in my Pietta brass framed revolvers with no problems,
I just load a sensible charge.

I too used some 777 in a Brass framed .44 Navy and you could actually feel the pressures increases even with low, light loads.
I'm also NOT in favor of constant 777 in Brass frames, but if you excersize care I feel that you can use a "Little" of the stuff if necessary. (JMHO of course)
In my 3 revolvers, you can feel the additional 777's shock thru the grips indicating it's real pressure and power advantage over other Substitutes. The extra that this powder gives is best used elsewhere and not as a constant diet in our "babys" LOL!
 Pyrodex "P"is great stuff!

I have used 777 since it was introduced and I see nothing "unusual"
with any of my guns from pressure. I do load my revolvers in the
really old fashioned traditional way. I drop in the powder, fill the rest
of the chamber with cornmeal and then seat the ball. I use a moderate charge
of powder, nothing heavy.

I read up some on 777 and see that if you seat the ball to firm, the pressures vary and it's inconsistant.
I was real carefull last session and just "Kissed" the ball (453 Speers) against the cornmeal filler and WOW what a difference! I got 2" groups at 20 yards (rested) and you could feel the difference in my heavy '58 Remington. 28gr loads= 35 B/P according to my calculator. A nice stout lead ball load in this revolver.
I like the 777's clean-up best, but I think I am going to stick to pyrodex to avoid any possible problems. 777 is a good choice for some but not me.

Never used triple7.  May have to some day, but as long as I can get something else I'd rather leave it alone.   They say you can stretch your $$ by using less powder than compared with the real black.
