hornady 150gr sst for 7.62x39
« on: June 06, 2009, 05:26:03 PM »
Hello folks.Right after Christmas I bought a Ruger Mini 30.Ihad done a good bit of research on these little rifles, about how inaccurate they are mainly.I had read several post on the new ones  and how much improved they are over the old ones and that handloads would really help them out.Well about this same time I get the Grafs flyer in the mail and they have the new Hornady 150gr sst advertised.Theys say they are great for .303 and 762x39.Well I bought some now I'm not so sure about these bullets.Once I load these I'm not so sure these will fit in the mag and feed from it.Now this is from  eyeing where the cannalure is on the new bullets and where the factory bullets are crimped. This may not be a problem because I have read that the Mini 30 has alot of lead in the throat area.I may just load these bullets by hand into the chamber and then use handloaded Rem 123gr psp in the mag.The reason I bought these is for the heavier grain weight and that they are supposedly a better bullet.I have read that some of these bullets have a hard time opening at the slower speeds these bullets travel at.Supposedly ballistic tips open pretty well at slower speeds,is this bullet basically a ballistic tip? Were these bullets built for bolt actions where you can get more speed out of them so they open better?I'm going to use H4198 and Rl7 to load these, from what I understand shuld be able to get 2000 to 2200 fps with these powders. What do ya'll think does any of this sound right,I will be using this to hunt deer and pigs under a 100yds?

I loaded some 150 spire points for my mini 30 (12 years old??) & it seemed okay.  Just shot one deer in the spine, so I didn't learn much from the bang-flop on that one.

Had about the same accuracy as the 123 grn.

I put a barrel weight/brake on the barrel & accuracy improved alot with the 123s & just a little bit with the 150s.  Went to a Hogue overmolded stock which improved the rifle lots.
Vote them all out, EVERY election!

Does anyone remember the scene from "Quigley Down Under" showing the aborigines lined up on the skyline as far as you could see?   That needs to be US!

Accordng to my correspondence with Hornady's tech dpt the minimum impact velocity for the SST to open reliably is 1700fps. So if your MV is low you may fall below this threshold inside 200yds.

I reccomend the 125 grn B-tip

the have a lower min impact threshold  at 1600fps and they can be launched a good 2 to 3 hundred FPS faster yet still have a fairly high BC. In my opinion making them a much better x39 projectile.

Or if inside 100 the 170grn sierra FP 30-30 bullets may work well. My ar15 loves em loaded to 2000fps

Are 125 grain Btips varmint or big game bullets?
99% of all Lawyers give the other 1% a bad name. What I find hilarious about this is they are such an arrogant bunch, that they all think they are in the 1%.

all the 30 cal noslers B-tips are hunting bullets. Doubly so inside 7.62x39's velocity envelope.

Remember a bullet intended to be a controlled expansion bullet in 30-06 may become a FMJ at 7.62x39 speeds, and vise versa with more lightly constructed projectiles. The 125 grn B-tip would not be my first choice for deer with a 300WM. But in 7.62x39 their golden.

Look at it this way shooting a deer at 100 with a x39 is roughly the same as shooting one at 400 with a 30-06 so you adjust bullet construction accordingly

Thanks Krochus. I had for years thought 125 grain B tips were constucted as varmint bullets. I looked them up and you are right, Midway says they are intended for deer and antelope.

Some are varmint bullets and some aren't it just depends on the caliber and or application. Some calibers nosler makes both for.

the cut away views on this page goes a long way to explaining this

Morning, thanks for all the replies.I guess I'll be getting some B tips os at least checking into them.A little misleading on the SST when the flyer says they're great for the 762x39.Do ya'll think that the factory Remington PSP would ok for deer if handloaded? Is it true that alot of the U.S. factory stuff is downloaded?Want to say I read that somewhere, anyway thnaks for you replies and the help.
