Some of my favorite rifles I've collected.
« on: April 16, 2009, 02:45:05 PM »
Thought I'd post a collection of a few rifles I've found over the last 5 years.  I like sharing pictures of my rifles whenever I get the chance.

Here are my .308 Calibers:

Model 50 JC Higgins .30-06 found in a pawn shop!

1896 Springfield .30-40 Full Stock sporter found in same pawn shop!

Enfield 1917 .300 H&H work in progress found in local shop, next item for it new stock and trigger!

.323 Caliber!

VZ-24 8mm-06 found on GB as a fixer upper!  Sorry didn't have any full length pics.

.338 Caliber!

Springfield 1903 in .338-06 A-Square found in a local shop!

My .358 Calibers!

Springfield 1903 in .35 Whelen found on GB!

And the one I'm most excited about, Savage 99 Brush Gun .358 Win that I traded for!  I just replaced the old Weaver K4 with 2-7 Micro Trac.

I've got quite a few more that I could post if I ever take time to dig out the camera.

;) Does the 3040 have a 30 inch barrel??? I would love to get an original 30-40 Krag. When I was young, I could have bought a truck load for $20. they were everywhere. Now look at the price. Nice buy. :D ;) congradulations ;)

Hey all, thanks for looking! :)

The .358 got me really excited when I found out a guy was looking to trade.  He wanted something he could find ammunition for easier.  I traded a synthetic Rem M700 ADL with Leupold VXIII 2.5-8X36 scope to get it.  I'm only getting about 2" groups with it but I'm hoping that will change once I find the right load.  I'd love to take this one elk hunting this fall.

The .30-40 might have a 20" barrel.  I've never measured the barrel length but the whole rifle is just a little longer than my Win M94 .30-30.  I'm sure this was cut down from a rifle, whoever did the work was very good.  The rear sight is dovetailed into a quarter rib, been thinking I could remove it and mount a scout scope to that rib.  I'd then find an aperture sight that would replace the magazine cut off.  I gave $325 for the Krag, quite a bit more than the truck load for $20.

;) taylorce1, the Krag could have been a carbine also. but it looks like a well done remodeling job. As for your .358, my model 99 usually is fed factory ammo. I suppose it groups around 2-2.5 inches. I never worried about it. It killed a mulie at 200 yards with a handload that didn't group a whole lot better. Consider the size of an elk. It will hammer an elk to say 225 yard. That would give you a group just over 4". Plenty for an animal the size of an elk. It it is over that, you have one of the best elk rifles around. The .300 H & H is a winner ;D :D ;) :)

WCH I know I can do better than a 2" group just have to play with it more, I'm not afraid to hunt elk with it as is though.  Besides it fits real nice in the saddle scabbard!  I've got some 180 grain Sierra RN loaded up for the .30-40 and been thinking about that for elk season as well.  I'd tell you how much that .300 H&H cost but it might upset some people! ;)

That Model 50 JC Higgins in .30-06 is sweet!
