That report was written in 1980.  With almost 30 years exposure since, it would be interesting to find a recent assessment of the preserved gun.  Anyone one know of such a report?  Anyone live near enough to observe the gun and report its condition to the forum?

For those of you who are interested in seeing what one of these huge guns looks like after conservation efforts have preserved it for future generations to enjoy please go to the Florida photo gallery on our website to see 7 photos of the one I studied in 2002 at Fort Pickens on Santa Rosa Island near Pensacola, Florida.  It even displays the "Oriental Red" Chassis and Top Carriage color mentioned in the conservation report.  Being in the same South-Eastern Regional Area, it could have been restored in the 1980s also, but all I can say for sure is that it was in beautiful shape in 2002 when I spent a whole day there.  This gun has the same configuration tube, top carriage, chassis and a similar platform to the one featured in the conservation report.  Enjoy the photos!

                       http://www.seacoastartillery.com/

Place cursor over Photo Gallery heading, then, after the fifteen separate galleries appear, place the cursor over Florida and
left click to reveal the Fort Pickens photos at the bottom of the first page and all of the second page.

I posted on the other forum asking if there is any recent information on that gun.  This was posted by someone who is a ranger, so maybe through connections she can get more info.

Thanks, it is the Yahoo group for our reenacing unit, the Norfolk Light Artillery Blues in the Nation Civil War Assn.  Mostly deals with stuff relating to our events, but sometimes real history manages to get posted too. <G>

Here is the update from the NLAB group:

I contacted Gulf Islands National Seashore and here is the response from the
historian, along with his contact info:
____

The Rodman on Fort Massachusetts is in pretty good shape, although it will need
painting soon. The barrel was tilted a few inches when Hurricane Katrina (2005)
overwashed the fort, probably from wave action on the breech. There is another
15" Rodman on top of Fort Pickens that is showing significant rust, but I
believe is scheduled for rehabilitation this year, if we can get done with
hurricane repairs and don't get hit again this year. There has been no road or
electricity in the Fort Pickens area since Hurricane Ivan in 2004.

Might could be that some of ou back that way could schedule a visit.
