T/C Renegade / Is it an early model?
« on: May 20, 2009, 10:19:49 AM »
I bought a used 56 caliber Thompson Center smoothbore.  The trigger guard is steel, not black like most Renegades.  The screws that hold the trigger guard on are brass, not steel.  The ramrod thimbles are browned steel. The barrel is browned.  The screws that hold the sideplates for the barrel wedge are also brass. It is not a kit.  There is no K on the barrel or in the stock.  Is this an old Renegade, or did someone switch everything?

I'm guessing someone swaped out the parts. I had one in 85' that was used at the time and it was all black trim and steel screws back then
I've got that 56 barrel, only shot it a few times, test fires really, it patterned well enough for clays at 30yrds

I'd also have to say you have a prom queen.

Short answer...
Renegade metal was all blued steel, not browned, not in the white - always.
No brass anywhere on the Renegade rifles - never.
Locks were all color cased - always.

My Renegade is a first year rifle (1976).  It has the same embellishments as every other Renegade TC ever made (all three times they made them).   IOW there were no special run Renegades like there was for the Hawken line.   That is other than adding a so called "Hunter" model with a single trigger in 1987.   So called because without all the brass flash of their Hawken, the Renegade was added to their line in the first place to be for hunting.   But customers wanted something easier for gloved hands - hence the single trigger with a bigger TG.

I think TC could have made the Renegade even better for hunting with all browned metal instead of the highly polished blued that they all wear.  If my rifle wasn't a first year in mint condition I probably would have browned it all myself AND got rid of the modern adjustable sights.

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

The only one I ever saw with white metal is mine and that was a kit.
