« on: May 10, 2009, 09:19:36 AM »
What do you all beleave to be the best .224 bullet ?  Tell me what cal. Your using it in  and what your using it for.
I Love the Hornady 55gr V-max's In my 223's and 22-250.  They make really small groups and do a number on Ground hogs , Foxes, and Yotes.  How about you ???

Depends on use really.

For the Hornet I prefer the 40s like the V-Max and Nosler BT.

For .223 Remington I use both the 40s and 50s again I use both V-Max and BT equally.

For the .22-250 I prefer 50s and again use both brands.

I hardly ever use 55s or heavier but have stocked up on them recently and do plan to give them a try this summer. I have also found the Speer 50 grain TNT to be a super bulllet for the .223 Rem.

I shoot mostly 50 V Max out of my 223's and 221 Fireballs, but I have shot some 40 grain V Max as well as other bullets. I have 500 40 grain V Max loaded up for a slow twist 223 that I have to turn necks for and the throat is set up for short bullets that I am taking on a PD shoot and 500 50 grain V Max for a slow twist regular throated 223 for the same shoot. Both shoot pretty well. The 50 grain SPSX shoot well too, if you do not push them real hard and do not have a fast twist barrel. For the money and accuracy, it is hard to beat a V Max bullet. I have not shot much of the Noslers, but would imagine they would shoot well too.

LaOtto222, Greybeard,
I've had great luck with the 50 V-max and the 50gr TNT. I shoot them in my 18" 221 Fireball.  Fun little carbine.  I've never had much luck with the Lighter 40gr Ballistic tips.

I've always used Hornady 50gr & 55gr SX bullets for varmints. I shoot 222, 223 & 22-250. These bullets always shoot tight groups and are deadly on chucks, fox & coyotes.
And now that I'm shooting a 22 Hornet & 22K Hornet more I really like the 35gr & 40gr V-Max bullets.
I've also had great luck with Sierra 50gr Blitz bullet in my 222's.
Nosler BT are also great bullets but a bit pricey.

Depends on the gun I am using. I like 40BT in my Super14 223, 300 yds. is about as far as I go with that one. For my RRA Varmiter with 1-8 twist, I go with the 60V-Max, unbeatable in that rifle among the poly tips at least.

Both my .223 and .22-250 shoot the 55 gr Vmax very well.  My .223 is a Bushmaster Varminter.  It shoots the 55 grainers into .5 to .7" groups.  I just shot a .321 group (10 shots) with my Rem 700 VLS in .22-250 with 52 gr A-Max.  I was also able to shoot 55 gr Vmax's into a .4" group (5 shots).  I hoping to try the 50's to see how they do.

I prefer the V-Maxes over the Ballistic Tips and BlitzKings.  Mainly because they have always shot better, and because of the price.

Poly tips for the 22 Hornet/218 Bee... the green tipped 33 gr. Hornady V-Max that was only made in the late 90's.    But my favorite 22 Hornet bullet is still the Winchester 46 OPE.

Poly tips for most of the other .224's were all superceded by the Speer 50 gr TNT's about a dozen years ago.   The rest I stayed with Sierra 52 HPBTM's in.   Why fix what ain't broke?

Used to shoot a lot of poly tip Hornady V-Max and NBT's in 17 to 25 caliber until the "newness" wore off, but not anymore.   Still shoot them in my six 17 rimfires (although I prefer the TNT's in the 17HMR).

Have a bunch of boxes of both brands of poly tips in all calibers I'm never going to shoot.    I'll put them all in the classifieds one of these days (no presales or waiting lists, so please don't ask).  They're not high on my long list of stuff to sell, but I'll get to them someday.

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus
